    1. That makes a lot of sense - everyone gets together for I LOVE YOU DAY and there is traveling involved - great idea.

  12. The engagements are more elaborate, the rings bigger, the weddings more extravagant. Not reality for most of us. They are not relatable, but just another group of celebrities.

    1. I have to remember when I read comments like this it's because this person has not either been engaged or has a different version of what extravagant looks like than others. My husband and I went away for an engagement. I have friends who have flown international and some that have closed a favorite restaurant for this. The thing is that we do have a lot of men who go big for this event and we should not try to stop them. This is why some men think it's bad to show emotions.

Even if you look on social media you could see that this is the norm. Also, all the Bates proposal with the exception of Erin's was in a different location and that's before a realty show. Just my two cents.

    2. 11:35- I don't think anyone should feel pressured to conform to some imaginary social media standard about proposals- or anything else, for that matter. There is such a thing as a low-key, but still entirely romantic, proposal. A man or woman doesn't have to jet away somewhere to show their emotions.

    3. I never did say that someone has to jet off to show their emotions. I said that they should not be chastised because of the way this proposal happen. I said that the Bates have been doing destination engagements from Day 1. Only Erin was the only who did not.

I think people on these boards hold the Bates to a higher level and become upset when they live it something different than their expectations. Are they doing proposals different than others, No. That's what I said. Thanks, for changing the narrative to make it look like I stated something different @9:18.
      pm.

When the previous post was talking about elaborate proposals and bigger rings. Gil and Kelly did not buy engagement rings for any of their daughters. That's the guy, and we have no idea how much any of them spent on a ring. And we don't need to. The Bates have done destination engagements prior to the reality show. That's what I was addressing.

    4. Anon at 918AM: I don't think Anon at 1135AM is suggesting everyone should have a fancy engagement or feel pressured to do so. The point was that the Bates going for "destination" proposals are not just something rich celebrities do.

I also find this trend not quite as extravagant for the Bates who believe in marriage for life, as opposed to some celebrities who go into "starter marriages" actually EXPECTING to divorce after a few years.

I doubt Evan himself felt any pressure from anyone to "conform" or compete with anyone, he WANTED to propose in a fancy over-the-top way. That's his personality, not to mention he comes from a family of music professionals.

On the other hand it's obvious Bobby and Tori aren't as fond of the limelight and so they had a pretty low-key (and low-budget) proposal. They did drive a few hours to a scenic spot, but it was hardly a swanky tourist spot, and he didn't have to hire any one to help him with it.

Of course, Bobby then got all sorts of flak from posters on this blog for "mailing it in". I'm sure that if Evan proposed in a low-key manner, he'd have gotten dinged for that, too. So the Bates cannot please everyone anyway, so why should they even try?

  13. Amazing location, so happy she’s engaged before Josie’s Wedding in 12 days time! I reckon a December wedding.

  14. that is a very nice place. why do they continue to sell themselves out to people magazine. If they do not watch tv nor like the valves this magazine brings why do they let them take pictures and get paid.

    1. Because they make a good amount of money from it. Maybe it helps pay for the wedding or helps the, buy a house. Regardless, it doesn’t really matter. They do what is best for them.

  15. Why must they take a trip to propose? I think that's awfully wasteful and extravagant for people with limited funds. Why not propose where they live? It can be nice too.

    1. Agree! Plus it totally ruins the surprise and spontaneity of a proposal

    2. Buy used and save the difference...…. that whole mentality went out the window.

    3. I agree about the element of surprise, but if you have the money to do something amazing like this, why not? What a memory to look back on! My proposal was nothing special, and I rarely look back on it with any special thoughts. We knew we were going to get engaged at some point, but it felt so flat and even disappointing that he just asked me while we were on a walk. Give the girl something to remember!

    4. They don't HAVE to have destination proposals. Tori and Bobby only drove a few hours by car to their destination. Erin and Chad also had a local proposal. Both were filmed so it's not like the show runners are making such excursions mandatory, either.

  18. Anonymous September 24th @8:523.

Valentines Day is on a Thursday I don't think many people could come to a wedding on a Thursday. And also most people have plans on Valentine Day with their familys.

    1. I agree with you on the above. Also, the Bates "I love you day" celebration is meant to include everyone in the family, not just couples, and to celebrate familial love as well as romantic love (hence the gift exchange that involves everyone).

If Carlin and Evan get married on Valentine's Day that would change the significance of the day a LOT (as every Valentine's Day thereafter will also be their anniversary). Seems rather selfish to me to "take over" the day for themselves, and that is why I don't think they'll do it.

      Delete
    2. Actually,I see it as more unselfish of them, because their anniversary will be overshadowed by the whole family celebration. The family seems to be supportive and unselfish enough to handle celebrating both things.

  19. Invasion of privacy from both parents to watch their children proposal, even if they were watching from far. If Gil and Kelly feel so strong about no kisses before wedding they should trust a bit more their kids for them to not doing it... but let young couple alone at least during a proposal !

    1. Oh I don’t think so! That’s a highlight to the parents to be included in such a important event in their children’s lives. And I really really think the children want their parents there!

    2. Personally, I have to agree with 2:05 AM. Never in a million years would I want my parents watching my proposal. Also I can understand how it can seem to some of us that the parents are overbearing and do not trust their kids. I am used to a lot more independent lifestyle when it comes to my relationship with my parents. It would be so weird for them to be sneaking around during my proposal. But I understand that the Bates have very different views on this and with their lifestyle and upbringing - maybe the kids really want their parents to be there.

  20. I commented on the proposals getting over the top after Evan's courtship proposal with the song. But now I must admit that these photos are amazingly beautiful - what a scenery! The proposal was also well thought and while it was elaborate, it was simple. I might be biased because I love music and without cheesy songs this was quite elegant. Personally I have heard people close to me had very low-key proposals, and as some commenters pointed out, so did some of the Bates kids. To each their own, we are different and like different things.

I wish all the best to Carlin and Evan. God bless you!
Best wishes to every reader and commenter as well. Thank you for the blog, Lily and Ellie!
