A Jaw-Dropping Transformation

"I wanted to cry, but I was too excited! I just hope we can keep it clean."
-Kelly Bates

If Thursday's season finale episode left you wondering what Gil and Kelly Bates thought of the new paint colors, decorations, and furniture that greeted them when they returned home from Josie's Utah engagement trip, you're not alone. Thankfully, UPtv captured their reactions on film for our enjoyment (video below). Are you a fan of the new look?

  1. I can appreciate all of the hard work the kids put into transforming the area shown. I do miss some of Kelly’s “country touches” though. I hope she will put back up a few of the Scripture verses, sayings, colorful country type antiques and dried flowers... just some things to brighten the area and make it look more homey. I love the family pictures and unique framing, but would hope they could be placed throughout the home and not just in the area shown. This transformation was such an act of love on the part of their children. What a wonderful gift!

    1. What if Kelly Jo LOVES everything about the new decor? What if it's exactly what she wanted? Would you still wish that she'd change it back to suit your tastes?

    2. Somehow I think Kelly Jo’s children know her tastes better than you do. It appeared as though she were quite happy with the results. Perhaps she’ll see these comments nd change it back to appease YOUR thoughts of what she would like though 🤦🏼‍♀️

    3. I agree with you @8:40!

  2. I loved everything about the transformation. Kelly's reaction was priceless and I know she appreciated her kid's efforts from the bottom of her heart. She and Gil are such loving parents and I can see why the kids want to give back to them. Thank you for posting this video.

  3. How about a before and after?

  4. Chad and Erin, your skills shone on this one! It’s beautiful even tho I’m not an “all white” kind of fan of the paint fad of today. Looks like it belongs in Arizona or out southwest somewhere where you need to paint it white. And other than feeling like another poster that said we miss the scripture verses and Christian sayings on the walls, the kids really outdid themselves on this one. I can’t imagine doing that amount of work in the little bit of time they had. It had to be Chad overseeing it all, else how could’ve they gotten that all done. I just want to say it’s BEAUTIFUL!! Well done!!

    1. Sincere question: why would “you need to paint (a home interior ) white” if it were located in Arizona or southwest somewhere?

    2. I was wondering about that comment as well. No one "needs" to paint white. That's an odd comment.

    3. I agree, it’s a weird comment. No one “needs” to paint white. What a strange comment!

    4. Nope not a strange comment if you’ve ever lived in the southwest. Lot of homes are white interiors out there. I know because I used to live there. It’s a cool color for a hot land. Looks like any of these commenters aren’t familiar with that and that’s understandable but don’t jump on commenting if you don’t know.

    5. All white is a very 1995 European thing.

  5. I just knew that Kelly would love it. She is so sweet and easy-going.

  6. That was so thoughtful of the kids doing that. What’s not to love?? They did a great job!!!

  7. Can you post before and after pictures? Thank you!!

  8. The "kids" redecorated? Where did the money for new furniture and supplies come from? Who paid for this?

    1. Don’t worry! It is none of our business. They did a wonderful job for their parents. Very kind, creative and loving. That is all that matters.

    2. You do realize that a large number of their "kids" are adults, right? Like with their own homes, jobs, and money?? Not to mention, how is it anyone's business who paid for this? Just appreciate it for the kind gift it was to their parents.

    3. Why is it any of your business who paid for it? What does it matter? I cannot imagine looking at anybody’s house or furnishings and asking “who paid for it?” how rude.

      Delete
    4. I wondered the same thing @6:18. How many times have they redecorated now?

      Delete
    5. Maybe they pooled their money together...why does it matter???

      Delete
    6. Did they ask you for money? Then don't worry about it.

  9. What a blessing for Mr. and Mrs. Bates to see the fruit of their labor. Raising godly children who have learned to serve and love others. May God continue to bless and grow the entire family closer Him and each other!

  10. While I agree all did a beautiful job, it just seems like it was done to Erin’s tastes and not Kelly’s.

    1. We really don’t know what they talk about on a regular basis.. Maybe Kelly has mentioned that she would like to change the decor. It could be that she liked Erin’s decor in her home. I’m sure the kids would try to accommodate Kelly & Gil’s taste while giving the rooms an update. I think all of us like to freshen up our homes from time to time. The kids were very thoughtful.

    2. I’m pretty confident their children know Kelly’s style better than anyone else, and knew what she would want in her own home. Not to mention, Kelly has complimented Erin’s style before, so I’m sure she’s not upset about the makeover.

    3. EXACTLY - Erin has nice decorating taste, however it seems she tends to do the same for Michaela too.
Kelly was much more "country" style taste.
The children did a good job, but very plain.

    1. He’s short. Very short.

    2. I met him once, and I'm pretty sure he was shorter than I am or no more than my height. I'm 5'8".

    3. He's shorter than me, so about 5'7" or 5'8"

  12. I love that the kids did this for them! And I love Kelly's reaction!

  13. I love that Kelly was carrying her pillow when she walked in, then dropped it when she saw everything. I enjoy The Bates Family so much. I love the closeness of their family. I love the sharing and caring, and how they show God's love for all of us. I'm sad that their season is over, and can't wait for the new season. I agree with everyone. I wish their show was an hour long. Be well, and be blessed..Bates Family, and all of us who watch.

    2. Did we watch the same video? I saw her drop the pillow when one of the kids came over for a hug.

  14. Wow! Id love it if my kids did this for me!!!

  15. Me too!! They really did a great job!!

  16. I’m so happy this family is on TV. I only get to see the clips as I don’t have UpTV but I enjoy them. I’m happy that God has blessed them with a steady income from the show. It shows how they always trusted God would provide and He has. And they trusted God that if they raised their kids to be like Christ that somewhere out there they’d find a good spouse who was raised the same, and it’s happened to all of the married ones. Praise the Lord.

  17. Where we’re the rest of the kids for the reveal? I’m sure Chad and Erin would have liked to see Kelly Jo’s reaction. Looks good in there, more modern. They could add some modern farmhouse touches

  18. One thing I couldn’t figure out: they left the curtains open! So Gil and Kelly walking up would’ve had some inkling of something. I know they would’ve caught glimpses of the white walls, the grey curtains, the family standing behind the camera men etc. Somethings amiss here. They would’ve even saw the camera crews vehicle(s) parked in the yard. Might not have been quite a surprise that everyone’s making over.

  19. There’s some secrets going on here that made it look like a surprise. Definitely some behind the scenes stuff of this video we couldn’t see and probably won’t show us. It couldn’t have been quite a surprise as they let on. Think of all the logistics.

  20. I noticed Gil wasn’t quite as exuberant as Kelly! He walked in and stood facing one way a little longer before he could start acknowledging. If he was like my dad, he was probably wondering where all the previous stuff went and if it was thrown out before he could have a say.

  21. I loved what they did especially framing all the canvas prints of the children only disappointment was pale grey insipid curtains - I know grey is on trend but a darker shade or a texture in them would have lifted them if grey had to be choosen I think it needed any coloured curtains to add warmth and life into an otherwise plain interior - plain walls, sofas & tiled floor...

  22. The house looks great! But what was in 30 bags that went to Goodwill ?? Who has 30 bags of stuff in there living room??

  23. I’m very late to the party because I just now got Uptv and am binge watching all the episodes-but curious as to why this video was never incorporated into the show?
