Suffering and Celebration

Tune in to UP tonight at 9pm ET/8pm CT for a brand new episode of Bringing Up Bates.

While in Chicago visiting Michael and Brandon Keilen, Kelly Bates receives a phone call that the family's house is on fire. She considers returning home, but Gil and the kids assure her that everyone is okay and tell her to stay where she is. Scroll down for snapshots, TV listings, and a promo video. Be sure to come back to the blog after the show for our recap.

When Gil and Kelly find out how the fire was started, they know that difficult conversations will have to follow. Kelly is still able to enjoy her time with her daughters.

Katie Bates and a family friend named Emily are also along for the ride.

After spending time in the Windy City, Kelly and Katie, accompanied by Michael, head down to Florida to visit Alyssa and throw her a diaper pounding. Warden Bates has been in Florida with Alyssa for the past several days.

Although it has been a difficult week, Gil says he wouldn't miss the diaper pounding for anything, even a house fire.

While thrilled that her due date is only eight weeks away, Alyssa's heart aches for Michael, who has always desired to be a mother but has not been able to become pregnant. Both women share their thoughts on this difficult journey that the Keilens are walking.

    1. I know. Michael has always loved kids the most of all the older girls and watching her sisters and sisters in law being pregnant and mothers must be hard too.

    2. I know being at my age which is at the late end of conception and having been through infertility treatments and other types of solutions and I know it is both hard and heartwarming to see other people grow their families! I have never ever been sad for somebody else to be blessed with a pregnancy but I have been sad to not be in the same position- I many people I have spoken to feel the same way because the baby is still a gift whether it's a gift for your a gift for somebody else it's still a beautiful miracle!

    1. There are many reasons why a couple may be experiencing infertility- among them: endometriosis, fibroids, low sperm count,
polycystic ovarian syndrome, and countless others. Are those conditions also a part of "God's timing"? I guess I don't buy such a simplistic explanation. Stuff happens- good, bad and everything in between. We are all at the mercy of time, chance, and our own choices. I don't think a higher power is looking down and necessarily orchestrating each and every individual life.
By the way, I hope you are able to fulfill your dreams of having children. My husband and I were never able to have biological children, but we do have two grown adopted children who have brought us great joy. What I've learned is this: Along life's path, unexpected treasure can be found right in front of us when we are busy looking in another direction.

    2. Post is beautiful and I bet your kids are great! I also don't take such a simplistic view!
One of their other children had a blood condition (+4 miscarriages if I recall) and has to get daily injections of folic acid and something else to thin her blood) - if I remember correctly in order to continue to carry her pregnancy to term. And they are now on baby 2! - I believe (I really wish I could remember names better!), but medicine and other options have their place! They are beautiful choices, and I wish I qualified for foster care! (darn conditions that I am told come closer to 70+ not late 20's early 30's!)

  3. I hope Michael and Brandon visit a fertility specialist soon- sometimes the problem is as simple as changing the type of clothing the man wears or exercise and diet! And if it turns out biological children are not possible, then I hope they consider adoption! They seem like they would be wonderful parents, and there are many needy children, especially in the Chicago area!

    1. I would be very surprised if they haven't already seen a specialist and are considering all their options. They haven't even been married two years and a lot can happen.

    2. She could even have the same blood clot issue as her sister Erin does, but she could be miscarriages before she unless she is early on, I believe Erin had 4 or more before the fertility doc put the picture together, so it should be mentioned to the Chicago doc - especially since I would imagine an obgyn fan, would be uncomfortable!

  5. All i can say is that I was blessed with being able to have babies and are in there teens and twenties.my mom and dad were unable to have babies and so they adopted four babies from different families.i have a older sister and two older brothers and I'm the youngest
I don't see or talk to my siblings.but i do know that it was not flesh and blood that made us a family it was love.

  6. Lily and Ellie, Please get word to Michael to research changing her diet to get pregnant. It is amazing that just going back to a real food diet can make a huge difference in getting pregnant. A functional doctor may be able to help her get pregnant. Chemicals in so m any foods can act as hormone distributors and prevent pregnancy, cause thyroid issues and a host of other health issues. Eating the way her great grandmother ate, can help her body get back to normal from the damage of processed foods. Please let her know. I don't even care if this get posted, but please get this message to Michael.

  7. Brandon and Micheal. It took us 2 years to conceive our first child. I feel your pain. The Drs had no answers and couldn't help us. We prayed for someone to help us and were blessed to come across an amazing clinic helping couples all around the world start their families. The name is Sharkey's Healing Center. They are located in Australia but help woman all over the world as I said. I took their herbal formula which corrected my hormonal imbalance and it helped us to be able to have our first child. Worked so well we are now a family of 5! Just something to keep in mind. I will pray for you both. Many blessings to you.

  8. Michaela had seen Erin & Chad go through a problem with maintaining a pregnancy - Brandon & Michaela are intellegent and WILL (or perhaps have already) seek medical advice when they feel it is the right time.
    I wish them well.

  9. Did Alyssa move to another house? The interior is different from earlier shows. Different kitchen and floor plan.

  10. When my daughter could not get pregnant, her thyroid was tested. The results were normal thyroid function. Her doctor put her on thyroid meds anyway and she got pregnant quickly thereafter.
