Tori and Bobby on Engagement Rings

"I am ecstatic that Bobby even thought of the idea of moving out here..."
-Kelly Bates

Tori Bates and boyfriend Bobby Smith say they are planning to wait until after Tori graduates next year to tie the knot, but some of the Bates predict that their plans will chance. In this deleted scene from yesterday's episode, the courting couple goes on a double date with Gil and Kelly...and the conversation turns to engagement rings!

  2. Bobby doesn't want Tori looking at engagement rings in the store, because she'll get an idea of what she likes and might not be happy with what he chooses. But she sees rings everyday on other people's hands, in her own family, and at Church, so she probably already has an idea of what she likes, even without looking at stores, so he should ask her for her thoughts.

    1. I know! I don't understand it either. The way everything is so very over the top. They act like they are surprised and it's really ridiculous because these girls even know the day they are being proposed to as there are camera crews and "special" dates. So let them pick their "special" ring and they will still act all surprised!

  3. What happens if her student teaching assignment takes her to another town? Or does Tennessee not require that for a teaching certificate?

    1. I think her internship has to be a commutable distance. Close enough that she could drive there each day.

    2. Hi. Currently studying to be a teacher in TN, and at my school they go by your address and try to keep you under a 20 min drive.

  4. Gil really needs to drop the 'reluctant father bit". It's annoying and not complimentary to him at this point.

    1. I thought the same thing. "Fake News" came to mind--LOL!

    2. Yes, Kelly-Jo patting Gil's arm every time saying "Daddy's having a hard time" is old. Besides it sounds like Bobby is going to be living with them just like Ben Seewald did with the Duggar's. Nobody is leaving the nest.

    3. Oh, you're right. Now that he's getting closer and closer to an empty house he should just admit how happy he is to get rid of his daughters. Is that what you mean? :)

    4. I was confused about Gil's mention of needing his shotgun. In Illinois a shotgun marriage is once forced due to the premarital pregnancy. Gil seemed to be referring to stopping the marriage. Are Illinois and Tennessee so very different in word usage?

    5. I believe Gil has a hard time every time one of his kids gets married. He is very sensitive and tears up often. I don't think it has gotten old at all to see someone who truly loves and cares for his children and misses them when they are gone. He equally loves all of his kids, so he gets upset each time. Even if Tori and Bobby live in Tennessee, it isn't the same as having her at home.

I think he was joking about using a shotgun to stop the marriage. You can tell he really like Bobby, so he was just teasing.

    6. I don't know why I read this in Kelly's voice, lol. But I agree with you. He seems to really love his kids.

  6. I have cousins who had twelve children and they used every opportunity as a teaching moment and that's what I see that Gil and Kelly do. They take parenting seriously. Teaching children discipline, self respect, respect for God and others is the most important job who will ever have. Bless you all!

  7. Kathy, no I didn't mean that at all. What I meant is these fathers are way too suffocating of their daughters' lives. He should be happy that his daughters have a relationship, love and hopefully a happy adult life as they are entitled. He should be encouraging and wishing them well. Wanting to 'keep the girls as girls' in the house as long as possible, just seems selfish and controlling. He and Kelly had the freedoms to attend a state university, a real social life etc. None of their children are entitled to that; just not right.

    1. You are making assumptions. How do you know that they won't let their kids go to a state university? Colleges have changed a lot since Gil and Kelly went. They indoctrinate students now. Have you watched the news since the presidential election? It is ridiculous what is going on on college campuses. Free speech is not being taught anymore. Conservatives are not being allowed to speak on some campuses. I don't blame the Bates if they aren't going to pay money to send their kids to public universities. Their children that chose to go are still getting a college education.

It is perfectly normal to have mixed feelings about your kids growing up. You are happy for them to meet someone and fall in love. At the same time you know life in your house will never be the same once they are married and move out. It is a happy time and sad time at the same time.

    2. 10:35- My son is a senior at a major midwest university. He is able to think critically, listen to varying points of view, speak his mind, and make sound decisions without pressure from others. There are many sources of "indoctrination"- organized religion comes to mind as one of them.

    3. Ah, yes... those evil public institutions of higher learning! It seems you are making quite the assumption that colleges are out to brainwash students. Have you attended one lately?

  8. I believe that Gil is still quite far away from having an empty house....many children still to go. Heck, Lawson may never leave!

    1. Please don't rush them! Let them mature and get to know each other a bit more.
