Bates Thanksgiving Snapshots 2018

As they do every year, most of the Bates clan gathered at Papa Bill and Mama Jane's farm in Honea Path, South Carolina, to celebrate Thanksgiving with the extended Bates. Even the Websters came up from Florida. Below are a few snapshots from their gathering.

  6. I’m interested in what religion Pap and Mama Jane follow and what Papa did for a living? Also, why doesn’t Gil live on their property like his siblings?

    1. They are Methodists.

Mama Jane was a nurse and Bill worked in the judicial system. They also owned a grocery store. Gil accepted Jesus in 10th grade via a coach that opened a church for athletes ( which Gil was as a football player and wrestler). Not sure why he and Kelly didn’t settle on part of the 80 acre farm Bill & Jane own like his 2 siblings???

  11. I, too, am curious about the religion of Gil's parents. They seem to belong to a 'regular, mainstream' faith as Mama Jane has a nice short hair do and wears regular clothing.
I believe the time has arrived that they are simply too many people for one lady to cook for and house. Isn't it time that perhaps KELLY COOK for the holiday and have Gil's parents over? Time for his mom to begin relaxing on the holiday.

    2. Some people just love to do it!! I’m sure there is lots of help with prepping, side dishes, desserts etc. I personally think the turkey is the easiest part🍗😄

    3. I remember reading somewhere that Gil’s parents are Methodist and Gil became “born again “ as a young man.

    4. That is incredibly rude to call the Bates abnormal. Just because you believe in skirts and long hair doesn’t make you weird. I happen to think that short hair and pants make a women look like a man.
Also Kelly hosts I Love You Day. If Mama Jane was too feeble to do Thanksgiving inam sure Kelly would.

    5. Whoa, 7:05. Saying women who have short hair or wear pants look like men is extremely rude. Treat others as you would like to be treated.
Mama Jane is far from feeble. In a previous Thanksgiving episode, Kelly explained that Jane likes to be in charge in the kitchen and had shooed Kelly away from helping.

    6. What if the men cooked, since even they presumably get 2 days a week off from their regular job, and countless years in retirement.

    7. 7:05- I'm trying to figure out which poster referred to the Bates as being abnormal or weird. Those are your words, not those of 5:22.
The comment was that Gil's parents belong to a regular mainstream faith. The Bates abide by a doctrine that is not mainstream- from their stance on birth control to the clothes they wear. You can read negativity into a statement of fact if you wish, but that doesn't mean it was intended to be. Your comment about women with short hair/wearing pants looking like a man does come across as very negative.

    8. What is regular in regards to clothing and what is considered a "regular" mainstream faith?

    9. Regina- I look at it this way- If the Bates belonged to a "regular" mainstream church, they would not have attracted the attention of any TV network. They stood out because of their large number, as well as their very conservative wardrobe choices. Not using birth control and adhering to strict dress codes are part of their religious beliefs.

  15. I don't see anyone calling the Bates 'abnormal' in these posts. Where do you get this from?

  16. I always wonder the same thing at 7:47. I know its a little town so they must stay at hotels in neighboring areas maybe Greenville or spartanburg.
