Tori's Engagement Ring

 Bobby Smith

Before leaving Pensacola to move up to Tennessee, Bobby Smith stops at Jewelers Trade Shop, the store where his dad purchased his mom's ring years ago (video and photo below).

He hasn't quite nailed down all the details of the proposal, but after he sees the finished product, he is even more eager to get down on one knee and unveil it to Tori, who knows an engagement is coming but doesn't know when. When Bobby arrives in Tennessee, Tori asks where the ring is hidden, but Bobby tries to play it cool.

Watch more of this Bringing Up Bates story line this Thursday at 9pm ET/8pm CT, on UP.

  1. While I’m so happy all the Bates girls get their “dream rings”, I find the whole “I was so surprised” to be ridiculous. Every proposal episode shows the girls crying and carrying on trying desperately to give a false illusion of “ I can’t believe it”! For once just be honest about it.

    1. I understand what you are saying. Yes, every proposal is special, but most certainly not a surprise and should no longer be portrayed as such. It feels phony when they know the ring is purchased ( as I believe nearly every girl had an input to the design) and know the proposal day as parents and camera crew are in place. Maybe their script just needs to be adjusted to have a more truthful representation of events. Anyway, happy for all of them.

    2. All I can say is when my husband proposed to me, it was a complete surprise and will forever be known as the toothpaste story...

    3. Just because the parents knew that that was the day doesn't mean the girl did and regardless of the fact that she knew that the ring had been purchased, that doesn't take the thrill and joy away from the proposal. The proposal itself is a surprise and it is an exciting moment. That's like saying that a pregnant woman shouldn't cry when her baby is born because she knows that the baby is coming. I knew that my now-husband was going to propose and I was still over the moon when he did and felt totally surprised. It's sad that you're so jaded and cynical.

    4. I knew my husband was going to propose soon before we married, but the actual day and how he did it was still a surprise. Also just because Tori’s nails were done doesn’t mean she wasn’t surprised. Her sister was in cosmetology school. She may have asked to practice on her. I am sure her family knew it was coming and wanted to help her look her best. They may have been able to get her to dress up and do her nails without raising suspicion. We also don’t know that there wasn’t a special day at college that day that required them to dress up more than normal.

  2. It is a stunning piece! Amazed that a new college grad had the resources for such large diamonds. He must have saved for a very long time! Tori will treasure it for the rest of her life.

    1. He's been in several episodes and those pay well.

    2. My husband saved up throughout college to pay for my ring. I personally think it is comparable to Tori's although mine is a solitaire. My husband paid cash for the ring-- not a dollar financed. It is very possible that Bobby is frugal and money-wise. It is also possible that he financed the ring. We never will know.

  3. What style wedding band fits her ring( which is very pretty!)???

    1. He probably had a custom wedding band made at the same time

    2. I’m sure it will be custom made just like most of the girls. Even Jessa Duggar-Seewald’s was all custom made.

    3. I would love to see the band as well. I love jewelry, especially diamonds and wedding sets! These girls are fortunate to be able to have custom rings at such young ages. I would also like to see the right Gil got for Kelly. I understand not wanting to brag, but then don't tease it on tv! We watch for all the details!

  4. She must of known it was happening soon because her nails were done. Tori doesnt seem to fuss so much with styling her hair, makeup, etc like some of the other sisters, like Erin. When I saw the nails I thought she knew the ring was coming any day. Best of luck to them! Back when I got engaged eons ago I was blessed with a beautiful ring but it wasnt a carat. I like how he went to the family jeweler. It also shows a lot about him to make that move for her. A lot of guys would say your moving to my state.

    1. Well, I guess she won’t need to upgrade for awhile!

  5. Actually, Brandon's ring for Michaella's was completely conceptualized by Brandon. In Bobby's case, it was inspired by something he saw that Tori liked, but it, too, had a lot of creative input from Bobby alone. Also, just because they THINK a ring is purchased, doesn't mean they know. Last but not least, the family often remains hidden during these proposals and having a "camera crew" follow them is normal. If they go on an ice cream date with them, why wouldn't a crew be present when they go to a scenic mountain ledge?

  6. Of course she knew all about it. This was a FILMED EPISODE of their TV show; rehearsals, blocking, camera angles, etc. This 'surprise' stuff is fake for the show. They most likely were already engaged.

  7. Goodness gracious! Leave the poor girl alone! Why people have to make such a big deal out of everything I will never know! Why waste your time even following them if all you're going to do is criticize?

  8. Who cares if Tori knew or how Bobby, as a recent college grad, could afford the ring. It’s wonderful to watch a happy couple.

  9. I agree, if you can't be happy and positive while commenting on this adorable couple than go to another blog. Enough negativity, let us Bates family fans have our positive fun.
