A Trip Down Memory Lane with Kelly Bates

An all-new episode of Bringing Up Bates is coming your way tonight at 9pm ET/8pm CT. As part of her 50th birthday celebration, Kelly takes her family to her hometown of Spartanburg, South Carolina.

The Bates meet up with Kelly's mom and sisters and tour her old house, which reminds Kelly of all the pranks she used to play on her siblings. They also stop by Kelly's high school, visit with her two favorite teachers, and watch an exciting science experiment.

To top it all off, Kelly and her best friend, whose name is also Kelly, host an unofficial class reunion at a local restaurant. The mom of 19 speaks candidly about the impact her parents' divorce had on her. Scroll down for TV listings, snapshots, and a promo video.

  2. So they brought their children to see where Kelly went to high school? How could they do that to their children? Kelly was allowed to have a real high school experience and they have denied their children the positives that go along with being in a school with other kids your age and kept them at home for EVERYTHING. So sad that they couldn't have attended even a Christian school OUTSIDE of home. Just not right IMO. Many other homeschooled children don't miss out on the social and sports opportunities and club activities, but these kids missed it all because they had to wash floors and dishes instead. ...once again, AT HOME. Their parents attended real school and a real university and didn't go the wayside. They're the perfect example and yet they deny their kids a real school experience.

    1. Anon@5:02- I think they would argue that their intention has been to shelter their children from secular influences. To each his/her own, I guess. Perhaps the Bates kids don't miss what they never had. For myself, my k-12 and college educations were invaluable.
The things I've learned, the people I've met, the friends made... I wouldn't trade any of it. It is encouraging to see that some of the older Bates' kids are attending a local college. (I don't know much about that particular institution.)

    2. They do NOT stay at home for EVERYTHING! And the rest of what you said is NOT true either!

    4. They seem to have great happy well adjusted kids. I don't think they suffered.

    5. My parents have homeschooled both myself and my 7 siblings. Both of them went to public school, and both of them went to college for four+ years. Both of them had hated it. My dad barely got along, my mother got all straight-A's, and they hated every minute of it. My dad said yes, he was very involved in sports and athletics, and that was the only part that he enjoyed about school. He had a few great friends, but also some who were bad influences that pressured him into doing the wrong things. My mom only had one or two friends throughout her entire school life. Besides being smart, she was also a fantastic softball player and made it into the newspaper multiple times. And yet both of them said they would not send their children to school for anything. My mom got a degree in education, and she pours everything into me and my siblings. All of us appreciate her for everything she does. Not all homeschoolers are holed up at home, wearing denim jumpers and just begging to be let out into the public.

  4. The Bates children could have attended a Christian school and experienced those good things that come with it. You can't hide from the world. One could get hit by a car crossing the street, so do you never cross streets? Please let me know what it is that these children did socially, athletically or club-wise that was outside of their home and with other children their own age that weren't their siblings or their church affiliated? I thank you for this information, but I don't think there were anything they did outside of their family. Those kids HAD NO REFERENCE to what Kelly was showing them. She and Gil also gave them NO opportunity to find that teacher that was great for them.
