Flying with Katie

Nathan Bates takes Katie Bates flying

"Katie is a really academics driven person, and she's very smart. She's really good at school. She's good with numbers, she's great with studying. So when Katie decided to become a pilot, I was surprised, but I think my family was surprised even more."
-Nathan Bates

Tomorrow on a new episode of Bringing Up Bates, you'll watch another one of the Bates siblings learn to fly a plane. Did you ever imagine that Katie would want to become a pilot? Neither did the Bates family (video below).

  1. What does Nathan mean? Becoming a pilot requires a ton of studying. There are so many licenses to study for! And there is a great deal of math. Sounds perfect for Katie!

    1. I think he just meant that he thought she would go into an academic field and concentrate her studies in that area.

  5. MO- Why is it that Carlin almost always is in the comments? There are 18 other kids in the family, there isn't a shortage of other people to give an opinion. I know I'll get some push-back from her fan club, but I wish the other kids would have a chance to comment now and then. :o)

    1. Carlin is just an outgoing person, making her fun to be on TV. I think all the others have their time on TV as well. ☺️

    2. Maybe she volunteers? Some of the kids are quieter than the others.

    3. MO- I can't believe that out of all the kids on the show, Carlin is the only one who is outgoing and volunteering to comment. She doesn't even live at home anymore. The producer singles her out a lot. Just saying... I'd like to see the younger children more often. :o)

    4. Yeah I've noticed that as well. I bet she runs over on filming days to make sure she's in every episode.

  6. Didn't the Duggars do something similar to this? John taught Joy how to fly

  7. I don't think it was very nice to belittle Katie's efforts by teasing her about her driving skills. Does she plan to be a career pilot or is this a hobby?

  8. If I recall correctly, when Katie was learning to drive, they had about 6 wildly talking and shouting passengers along which would distract and rattle any new driver. With only Nathan with her in the plane, I'm sure it was a much calmer environment in which to learn.

    1. You are so right. They put her in a big van filled with the most dramatic family members yelling. If she could learn to drive under those conditions she can do anything. That show made me feel sorry for her

    2. And I think Kelly Jo was right there with them, allowing the noisy drama and even contributing to it. She should have told the others to quiet down so Katie could concentrate. I thought it was very irresponsible of her to allow that behavior.

  9. MO- Yes, I remember that. I could never figure out why the kids were allowed to ride with a sibling who was learning to drive. It was like a big joke and very distraction for the student driver. I wasn't impressed with all the drama going on in the car. I'm sure Katie is a good driver. :o)

  10. This seems like a very unsafe activity. Such a tiny plane. Most likely has only one engine. The Bates should be less afraid of dancing and pants, and more afraid of this activity.
