Gil's Shoulder Surgery

Gil and Kelly Bates
Gil and Kelly Bates, summer 2019

Gil Bates is recovering from rotator cuff surgery, which he had yesterday. According to Kelly, when he preaches to teenagers, he initiates a push-up challenge and promises to do two, one-handed push-ups for every push-up they do. Well, during one of these challenges, he reached 84 one-handed push-ups, and his shoulder popped. The doctor informed him that in order to play basketball with his sons or even do tree work again, he would have to have surgery. We know that the Bates would appreciate prayer for Gil's recovery.

The Bates family has had their fair share of surgeries since the premiere of their show in January 2015--multiple wisdom tooth extractions, Kelly's eye surgery, Brooklyn's finger surgery, Meema's vertebra surgery, and Alyssa's two cardiac surgeries.

  1. Gil needs to learn not to press his luck and overdo by trying to painfully prove how tough he is. I've seen this happen to more than a few members of my own family. They now have their hips, knees, and shoulders replaced in varying degrees.

  2. Prayers for Gil and the rest of the Bates family! I’m so sorry this happened to Gil but God will always work out all situations for the good of His people and for His glory (which the Bates already know for a fact!). Speedy recovery for Gil in Jesus’ Name!

  21. Without medical insurance how are they paying for this surgery and physical therapy afterwards? I would like to know that because not everyone has insurance and can't have that surgery for the cost.

    1. I thought the government required everyone to have insurance.

    2. Their tv show makes a surprising amount of money.

    3. That requirement was dropped last year. You are no longer penalized at tax time for not having coverage.

    4. @6:32- They may have a health care savings account and/or belong to a health insurance consortium. Perhaps TLC has coverage they can buy into.

  22. First I want to say we will be praying. Second - KellyJo you have lost weight and I don't ever think I've seen you looking better. Always beautiful. You were never fat or anything, i don't mean ANYTHING like that. Please know that. But I was like - I better get busy and get in shape too. LOL That kinda thought. Praying for Gil and for you all always. <3

  24. Shoulder surgery is rough...at 33 I had a repair done for a labrum tear, and it took a good 4 months to start feeling normal, and even then it was weak..my PT said that shoulder surgery is pretty much the worst to come back from because of how much rotation/movement it takes/needs...I’m almost a year out and it feels great now, but sometimes it gets sore...the funny thing is, I can now predict when rain is coming! ;)

Speedy recovery Gil, you can do it!

    1. I am 6 weeks post surgery. This is my second rotator cuff surgery. Give years ago I had the first one done. It healed well and I have had no trouble. I am just now able to take my sling off for short periods of time. PLEASE, listen to your doctor and do just as he says.Physical therapy is hard and at times painful. But hang in there, it's worth it!

    3. Absolutely, PT was crucial! Doing all the exercises at home was the game changer (had a pulley system on the bathroom door, did the wall climb exercises, the worst was going behind the back), but yes, following PT orders was key!

  26. I had this surgery in Sept 2017; its more painful in therapy or shower. I used laughter in physical therapy instead of crying and it actually helped. Praying for you while you recover.
