Bobby's Impressions of the Bates

Bringing Up Bates

"You have to second guess and question like every single move you make."
-Bobby Smith

What is it like getting to know an unusually large family that also has a reality TV show? On tomorrow's new episode, "The Bates Get Candid," the clan answers questions about filming Bringing Up Bates. Bobby admits that he was a bit apprehensive when he first met Tori's parents and siblings. Hear from him in the preview clip below.

  1. Oh, Bobby you totally knew all the details about Tori before you met her. Be real.

    1. You can be married for 30 years and not know all the details about him or her. Knowing someone has a bunch of siblings and then meeting them is competely different. I bet trying to get all of their names down was challenging. I don’t know if Bobby lived in the dorms at PCC, but there is no television there. He probably had not seen the show.

  3. There’s no way you can know “ all the details” about anyone before you meet them. Bobby was being “real”

  4. That was a cute clip. My husband was definitely nervous about meeting my family. Like the Bates, he was warmly welcomed.

  6. If a person has to 'second guess every move they make' how can they be genuine and really get to know one another. God forbid the courting guy shows himself to be in a bad mood...would he be ousted and the courtship discontinued? I don't think this is a very good system as it prevents the two from being themselves in all moods in front of each other. Life isn't one big date where your hair is perfect all the time. These girls seem to be believe that. Be good and God will send you a PERFECT husband. Not true, as no one is perfect. Gil said that to one of his own daughters...trust HIM (Gil) to guide her with the guy she courts and he'll be PERFECT for you. I remember that episode scene very well. This is just not true, for Gil is human and subject to mistakes just like any one else.

    1. Your post reminds me of something my great-aunt told me long ago when I asked her why she never married- "I was looking for the perfect husband, but when I thought I'd found him, it turned out he was looking for the perfect wife.

    2. I don't remember that episode but there's a big difference between "perfect for you" as in, a perfect match, and "a perfect husband" as in, a model husband with no flaws.

And I am sure Gil did NOT mean "perfect" in general. One of the big tenets of Christianity is that ONLY Jesus is perfect. But I know many evangelicals think "God has already picked out the perfect partner for each person" (though I disagree) and I guess it's possible the Bates do too.

It also seems Gil is not as invested in being the match-maker for his daughters as a certain other Reality TV dad. Or maybe he used to be and now has backed off a bit? Both he and Kelly Jo have admitted that they are not as strict with the younger kids.

Of course I'm sure there is some "vetting" that he does, but no one has mentioned any mandatory questionnaires.
