Tori: 'It’s just not me to be perfect'

“The whole wedding, I was just honestly trying to make everything so perfect and do everything so perfect. It’s just not me to be perfect.”
-Tori (Bates) Smith

Did you have a chance to watch the Bates wedding special? If you did, you probably noticed a hiccup during Tori and Bobby's vows. After stumbling over the words "lawful wedded husband," Tori starts laughing uncontrollably. UP captured the moment in the video below.

  1. I do that when I’m nervous too. Did it an my own wedding when the Pastor said “you may kiss the bride”. Very embarrassing!

    1. Oh I had it even worse, when I was so nervous and teary, and then it happened, I giggled a huge snot out of my nouse, right in front of a close up camera...still can not get over it...14 years later!!! :)))))

  2. It was a beautiful wedding, however I can’t help wondering if a small intimate candlelight wedding with immediate family members and close friends wouln’t have been more appropriate under the circumstances. It appears Tori was struggling throughout the whole experience.

    1. I really got the sense Tori "took one for the team" in allowing the wedding and the leadup to it to be televised, and I wonder what she'd have done if the family didn't have the show.

And assuming she eventually has a baby, I wonder how much we'll see of that process. I won't be surprised if it's quite minimal compared to her siblings.

    2. Exactly. All the kids cherish their parents and the sacrifices and hard work they have done in raising them up.
They don't want Gil up in trees at his age and the show is thier family income.

So yes, Tori, being a grateful daughter, did her part.

Ya know, in many other cultures this is a given.

  3. This is one of my favorite parts of the wedding. It was a genuine moment and showed her personality. I remember Tori and Erin breaking into giggles, in a previous episode, while practicing for a concert. Seeing Erin trying to contain her laugh during the wedding made it that much better.

  4. That was hilarious! Lightened up the wedding for sure.

  5. She reminds me of a 10-year-old in this scene. This behavior is not cute or endearing at all in an adult.

    1. Oh leave her alone. She’s young and nervous. I was the same way during my wedding and I’ve been married 18 years. I thought it was real.

do you know how long after the episodes are filmed, that they are describing the events to unfold on the show? i know the episodes are filmed about 4 months in advance

  8. When I get nervous I get extremely red, which makes me embarrassed, which makes me even more red lol
I hate it. I keep thinking that the day I get married I’ll look super red in the pics. I would prefer to have the nervous laughter thing going on.

    1. Tori's ears were red, but luckily her face was not. I get very red too and it's so frustrating.

  9. I found it really unfortunate. The vows are the most important part and she just laughed thru it all. She acted very immature. I wonder what his parents were thinking!

    1. I have to agree with you. I thought it showed how immature Tori is. However, I don’t have laughing fits like Tori seems to or some of the other people who commented so I’m not sure how uncontrollable that is. Regardless though I think it took away from the sanctity if that moment.

    2. People take themselves way too seriously! At least we know they won’t have a shortage of good times and laughter in their marriage. I think that’s a good thing.

    3. I agree 😊

  10. I don’t think it was done deliberately. There are medical conditions that can cause these responses.

    1. People are so quick to blame everything on medical conditions these days. Have you ever considered that she is just immature?

    2. Medical reasons for nervous laughter?? Hmm...

    5. She said she was nervous, and nervousness does have that affect, lighten up, they all chuckled about it, I was also nervous at my wedding, trying to remember what to repeat, Great job Gil getting her through it,I'm proud of you all.😊

  11. I don’t find her laughing through he vows as immature. I found it sweet. If there’s one thing we know about the Bates’ they take marriage seriously. I laugh uncontrollably when I’m nervous. Tori hates being center of attention.

  12. There was a quick shot of Bobbie's parents when the wedding vows were being said, they looked a little taken-back. I understand that everyone has different ways of acting while being in the spotlight, but the laughing was just sad. I'd expect that from a teenager at prom, not a adult during the most sacred part of the ceremony. But the way the bride has acted during the entire wedding process, I'm happy it's over and we can all move on.

    1. I think its safe to say there will be a lot of laughter in their marriage. :)

    2. Tori was a radiant beautiful bride...giggles and all.

    3. I agree. Ruined the vows! A little giggle is one thing- but to keep it up! I saw his parents make a face as well.

  13. As someone who has a serious nervous laughing problem this would probably be me. I also think a wedding should be a joyful occasion so I don't think the giggles were inappropriate. Either way we often can't help what we do when we get nervous.

  14. It was difficult to watch Tori this season, she just seems so immature, it’s painful! HOWEVER, this episode she honestly won me over. I actually like her now! Sure, laughing during vows was shocking, but throughout the episode she was so real! When you watch the Duggar weddings, the brides are always like freakishly calm, freakishly relaxed and sweet. How is that even real? Kendra Duggars sister forgot the brides eyelashes and Kendra was clearly annoyed but held it in like a Stepford Wife! Tori was finally an honest and real bride. Her authenticity was so relateable. I do hope she fully understood the gravity of her marriage vows and I hope they got married for the right reasons and not just for the physical. But ones thing for sure, she’s gonna be an interesting one to watch settle into married life. She’ll keep it real! Side note: How sweet was Gil during her laughing fit?? “This is your wedding honey. You’re not doing a thing wrong.” My heart melted when he said that. Dad of the year award, no wonder they all love him so much!!!

  17. If the whole wedding planning process made Tori so uncomfortable, why in the world did she have to go through that? This wedding was NOT her own desire, but her mother's it seems to me. Yes, a small family only intimate ceremony and reception would have suited her better. She had no choice about her own wedding also like everything else in her unmarried life? I don't think she was ready to marry anyone yet.

    1. You don’t think she was ready to marry anyone based on her laughter?

    2. 5:56. I disagree with you about Tori not being ready to marry. That was completely out of line. Tori should not have been coerced into having her wedding televised as she clearly did not enjoy the attention. Shame on Gil and Kelly Jo for not allowing Tori to enjoy her moment as a bride in exchange for their financial gains.

    4. I think everything went as it should, no Blame on anyone!it lightened it up, most weddings are nerve wracking! I'm Proud of the whole Bates family!😊

    5. I don't get the sense Tori was coerced into anything. I do get the feeling she didn't quite realize what she was getting into. Many brides feel overwhelmed with wedding planning and they are NOT having the weddings filmed for a TV show.

  18. I think the wedding was Tori and Bobby's perfect. The memories made that day are ya lls forever.God bless you both.

  19. I actually felt sorry for Tori. She said she was embarrassed. That must have been a horrible feeling to not enjoy being the center of attention, doing a big wedding for her family’s tv business, and then have strangers comment on how they hope she understood what marriage vows really mean because she was immature. Cut Tori some slack people!

    1. Yes! I get all smiley when I'm nervous and if I have to speak or anything I freeze. It happens when you are not sure how to regulate emotions. A lot of people have expectations for weddings. It can create a lot of anxiety. Tori was likely very overwhelmed and laughing is a way to regulate that stress.

Let's say you exercise when you're stressed. Well getting married in a big church, in front of quite a bit of people, and being filmed for TV does not give you the option to go for a run. The morning of the wedding doesn't leave much time to do that either. The stress relieving aspects of laughter is similar to that of exercise.

  20. I think they didn't practice the wedding vows, or Tori did not read through them prior to the big day, because she looked like she was caught by surprise at the wording "lawfully wedded husband". All of that embarrassment could have been avoided with a simple run-through at the rehearsal.
