Chad Turns 35

Happy 35th birthday to Chad Paine! Chad became Gil and Kelly Bates' first child-in-law in November 2013. Now almost nine years later, there are nine (soon to be 11) in-laws. It is fitting that Chad is also the eldest of all the Bates siblings and in-laws.

  1. 35! And he has so many more years of hard physical labor working construction. I hope he finds a less demanding form of work soon. Maybe those Scripture cards. Construction is terribly hard on your back and your knees.

    1. 35? You make it sound like he has one foot in the grave! I've known plenty of guys in construction who keep working well into their 60's. If he's a contractor, he can always hire out for the more demanding jobs.

    2. If they are working construction in their 60's, that tells me that they didn't earn enough to retire. I hope Chad can find a more sustainable form of employment because one injury to his shoulder or back will mean months of no income. I've seen it happen before.

    3. What's wrong with saying construction is not sustainable? I'm sure they could support themselves quite well with the Scripture cards.

    5. Yes, those people may be still working construction in their 60s but it doesn't mean that their bodies are up for that type of work...jobs filled with pain; back pain, knee joint pain, etc. It means that the poor guy can't retire yet or wasn't qualified to do any other type of non-physical work. These individuals wish they could retire but they can't yet. Even at this young age, Chad needs to make sure he gets his rest. I doubt he get is though.

    6. There's nothing wrong with being a construction worker. It's an honorable trade. Yes, it has risks, but I am not sure why everyone is acting like it's so undesirable. Frankly, such comments on a hardworking man's profession are rather snobbish.
Our society looks down on blue collar work as undesirable and the province of the uneducated and that's a shame.
Go Chad! Work hard and don't be ashamed of your provision.

    7. 9:22 Yes, let's stop wringing our hands with worry about Chad's line of work twenty years from now.
