Lawson's Valentine

Katie Bates, Lawson Bates, Kelly Bates, Gil Bates, Nathan Bates

Zach Bates: "Are you going to bring Nathan again, Lawson?"
Lawson Bates: "I'm not bringing Nathan. I've upgraded in the beauty department."

This week on Bringing Up Bates, Lawson tells the family about his California girlfriend, Tiffany. And he plans to bring her to the Bates' I Love You Day event. Below is the written summary of the episode, as well as a preview video and snapshots.

Lawson's New Love and the Boutique's New Digs

Now that Erin’s health is on the upswing, the Paine’s are tackling a new project: renovating an old camper. Will they decide to resell it or keep it in the family? At the Bates house, Gil, Kelly Jo, and some of the kids have a family meeting to discuss ideas for their upcoming I Love You Day party, but will they all agree on a theme? It’s moving day for the Bates Sisters Boutique! Whitney, Erin, and Carlin rely on their family to help them move out of their old workspace and into their new downtown Rocky Top location. Later, as Jackson and Trace are hanging out with Lawson and his dog Duke, Lawson updates his brothers on his new relationship and mentions his girlfriend will be attending the I Love You day festivities. Does this mean another Bates boy is leaving the bachelor squad?5!

  1. Why don't the boys go through a formal courtship with chaperones, etc? They just seem to have girlfriends, like any other guy in the US. Is there a reason the girls are treated differently? Has Gil spoken to Tiffany's father and given his consent for Lawson to see her?

    1. The girls also wear purity rings... what about the guys? It seems that in this type of patriarchy, there are definitely two sets of standards for males and females.

    2. Yeah, i've seen that too. i guess cause they're adults and don't live at home anymore. Katy is an adult too but she does live at home. I'm guessing thats why

    3. @11:36- very good questions.

    4. The guys talked about the rings at one point. I think it's because they weren't into jewelry.

    5. I agree with 1:33.
Certainly they treat men better than women. It‘s something you can almost always see with very religious people, no matter the religion. One reason more to leave it behind for good.

    6. It is probably the parents of the girls that profide chaperones. There is always a sister/cousin or two who travel with the girls.

    7. It is common for the boy to talk to the girl's father about the relationship. Maybe the Tiffany's father doesn't want to be filmed and we just didn't see. I am sure that Gil and Kelly are staying involved with their boys relationships.

    8. May 26 @1:33...
      Totally agree!

    9. Why would it be the girls' parents who provide chaperones? What if Tiffany's parents don't care about chaperones?

    10. Do young women need chaperones more than young men (although Lawson is hardly a "young" man)? If so, why?

    11. Girls must have chaperones but not boys, necessarily.

    12. @10:58- girls have chaperones BECAUSE of boys!!!

    2. She is 23 and he is 28! They’ve waited a long time.

    3. All of Lawson's sisters married at Tiffany's age (except Michaela who was a bit older)

    4. 2:39 - being in your 20s is waiting a long time to get married? Ummm are you aware that some people don’t get married until their 40s?. At 22 (Tiffany’s actual age) and 28 most people aren’t even considering marriage.

  4. Zach went through a failed courtship. I think they learned from that and then again with Nathan. The boys are all much older than the girls as well.

    1. Michaela had to follow the courtship rules till she married at 25. Why do Lawson and Nathan get to skip them?

    2. Their ages shouldn’t have much influence. They’ve all courted as adults. Plus, If they think both the guys and girls are at an age where they are ready for marriage, they should receive the same treatment.

  6. “California girlfriend” is an interesting descriptor. It implies he has other GFs in different states, lol.

  7. Double standard especially Lawson’s girlfriend hangs all over him plus wears clothing that’s not in their Christian values.

  8. Doesn't Erin look just like a blonde Kelly in that last picture ? 😁

  9. This family has gone on record to say that both sets of parents were to be informed when either a son OR a daughter had an interest in someone. How is it that Gil and Kelly acted 'so surprised' when Lawson and Nathan informed them that they already had a girlfriend? They all were supposed to let their parents know and obtain permission to move forward after that...no announcement by this family was made about this.

  10. I think Michaella resembles Kelly the most for daughters & Isaiah the most for sons (he looks like Kelly's father a lot - even his body type).
They are ALL good looking kids/people.

  11. Please say DATING> Courtship was back in 1940's to the 1950's. They are dating . Nobody courts girl's anymore. They are no different than you and me. They just have different belief's. Lot's of people have failed relationships too. Bate's aren't any different.

    1. Courtship took place well before the 1940s. Anyway, they (a) can call it anything they like and (b) do have a different philosophy behind it than most people do when talking about dating.

    2. I think they use the term courtship because they want to give the impression that what they're doing is special and different from everyone else. I guess they're free to call it whatever they want, but I think it's important for viewers to take it with a grain of salt. Obviously, these Bates bachelors have a different take on it.

  12. They date like everybody else not a courtship. No different than anybody else.
