Pet or Person?

Zach Bates

"We kind of grew up thinking it was a person because we were all around it so much and playing with it so much."
-Zach

In this Bates Legends clip, Zach Bates and Michael Keilen, the oldest Bates siblings, share the story of their well-tempered horse, which was more like a member of the family than a pet.

  1. I always love clips about the families memories or the games even the tasting videos.

  2. I find it strange referring to their pet horse to be like a member of their family, yet Zach refers to the horse as 'it'. Why not refer to 'a member of the family' as either he or she?

    1. Isn't he calling the horse "it" now because it is years later and he doesn't still think of it as a person?

    2. I would imagine he meant no harm... he is just giving an interview about a topic he was asked about and he is answering it on the spot. I imagine if all of us had our every words monitored on a day to day basis, someone would find something “wrong” with everything we say. Besides, the horse does not care.

  3. The horse identifies as "it". Let's be respectful of that. :) Cats and dogs are considered as family members by some, so why not horses too. LOL .

  4. Some people do that I guess. My mom & grandmother refer to all babies as “it”.

  5. If it's a member of the family, I find it hard to believe that no one noticed it was pregnant, and that there was so little fanfare.

  6. I call my cat my daughter.
