Basketball with the Bates Boys

"Those baby showers, I've been to a few of them. They're really not my thing. They're all the same."
-Nathan Bates

While the Bates ladies are at a baby shower, the Bates guys step out onto their outdoor basketball court for a competitive game (video below).

  1. You know, Nathan, I’m your Mom’s age. I’m sounding old when I say in my day men didn’t go to baby showers. I just don’t get it. I find them boring, and would rather play basketball too.

  2. perfect timing as usual ellie! i was just thinking about how we havent seen or heard from nathan in a while.
when my husband and i got married, his work did throw him a shower like they were telling evan in the clip. he was 1 of 3 men that worked in an office of women and they called me to ask if it was all right. he thoroughly enjoyed it and we got some very useful gifts. one of my showers was through his church but only ladies attended. the other was at my job which was all female except the 2 bosses (father & son) and they kind of hung around in the office because it was in our lunchroom
like anon @ 10:36am, i'm close to kelly's age too and all my baby showers were for women only. however, my kids friends, in that age group, usually all have couples showers. that seems to be the trend now and i think it may be because men have a more 'hands on' approach to families nowadays. (ex: when i was young, you never saw fathers in the drs waiting room, now it's the norm!) same with gender reveal parties. i dont think they even existed when i had my kids and now, its perfectly normal to have one! (not knocking them, i think they're awesome - no gifts expected and a great excuse to get together)
couples showers are getting so normal now. i think it was erin who wanted a 'girls only' shower and that made me realize how much things have changed

  3. Men don't go to baby showers at our church. Must be getting harder and harder for Michaela. One right after the other. Took my daughter over 8 year. But God said yes and they have a baby girl.

    1. If someone truly wants to be a parent, there are ways to be one. At some point you have to ask yourself what's most important- having a biological child or being a parent.

  4. Strange that the boys can wear shorts but the girls can't?

    1. And that’s a recent change! Remember them swimming in jeans!!!

    2. Why is it strange?

    3. First time I ever saw a Duggar in shorts was when Ben Seewald joined the crew. I recall being shocked. Ben must have swayed their opinions. It was when Ben lived in the shop and put in a home gym and was personal trainer to Jessa, Joy, and some of the boys. Jeans every day in summer is tough!

  5. I’m with you 10:36! I do not care for showers and would certainly prefer to play basketball (or anything else!)! Showers are just dreadful.

  6. Nathen you right on the money, in my day if a man came to a Baby Shower then it was like a bunch of hens in a hen house... I would rather play basketball to...

  8. MO- I agree with the guys- I'm from a generation where showers were just for the girls. I know things are different now but I still enjoy just being with the girls and talking all things wedding / baby. I'm more comfortable that way. :o)

    1. The girls on the show are in great shape. I'll bet they've got that covered.

    2. Being slim is different from having good muscle tone and cardiovascular health.

    3. I recall Alyssa doing home workout tapes every morning in a video of when she first got married and moved into her house in Florida. Whitney and Zach were on a big fitness challenge last summer or one before to lose weight. They did! The rest probably take walks in their beautiful surroundings. And all the pics we see of them hiking and riding horses etc.
