Kelly's Post-Surgery Look

In the September season finale of Bringing Up Bates, Kelly Bates shared her struggles with gastroesophageal reflux. She has since had a procedure to help correct the issue and reveals that she is feeling so much better. You will no doubt hear more about it on the next season of the show, but in the meantime, we wanted to post this photo of the mom of 19 looking absolutely amazing!

Kelly shares an update on her health. She has struggled with gastroesophageal reflux for years and has already had her gallbladder removed. The frequency of her reflux, especially after having 19 children, has created pre-cancer cells in her throat. She needs another scope, but she must first get over the coughing caused by a recent episode. “She’s just too young and beautiful to be suffering like this,” says Gil, who is eager to find a solution for his wife.

  3. I had GERD for years due toma hiatal hernia. Had surgery to fix it and haven't taken any medication for it since. Praying yours is completely gone after your surgery. Nothing is too difficult for our God. ♥️♥️♥️

    1. So good that your surgery helped. Unfortunately not the case for me. The surgery I had ended up messing up and causing more problems.

  4. Praying for her strength as well as a quick and full recovery. Also praying for the test of the family to have strength and be encouraged in the fact that this too shall pass. They are all survivors and mean so much to so many. God bless

  7. Kelly! I'm so sorry to hear of your difficulties with GERD. I suffer from GERD as well. I found a book called The Acid Watcher Diet and the Acid Watcher Diet Cookbook, and both have helped so much! Take care!

  8. I don't understand Gil's comment. If Kelly were ugly, it's Ok to suffer?

    1. I didn't read it that way at all. He loves his wife, thinks she is beautiful, and doesn't want her to suffer. I'd hope any loving husband would say the same about their wife.

    2. No, he is just saying sweet things about his wife. Let it go.

    3. He was complimenting her. Don't turn it into something it's not.

    4. I think Gil meant as she is young she isn't expected to suffer from such ailments,as older people are usually the ones who get a variety of deseases not younger people and beautiful was just added to show affection towards his wife whom he cares very much about.

    5. Disease has no age boundaries at all.

    6. 4:28 - You're making something out of nothing. Go outside and appreciate God's creation. You'll feel better.

  12. There are physical ramifications to a woman’s body for having so many children. Gil should not be surprised that his wife has suffered. There is no logic in not using birth control of some kind. I hope Kelly finds permanent relief.

    1. Their choice was based on faith in something they felt God was calling them to be open to. We all make sacrifices in life, and it's better to sacrifice for good than to sacrifice the good for less than what we were supposed to do in life.

    2. I know people with two kids who have the same issue so you can’t just blame it on that.

  13. Kelly looks FANTASTIC and younger than ever!! God has been good and it shows!! You can tell, she's feeling great!

  14. You look stunning Kelly! You certainly don't look like a woman in her 50's in this pic. You look probably late 30's/early 40's. Probably your 9 remaining kids under 18 still at home is what keeps you young.😁👍 Is the top from the Bates Sisters Boutique? It looks familiar.

  18. Kelly is just an amazing lady and even though I'm about ten years older than her, I just admire her so much. I'm glad to know she's feeling better and she looks fabulous! My very best to her and all of the family.

    1. I feel like once you hit a certain number it doesn’t really make a difference. Like even having eight kids as opposed to twenty?

    2. I don't know that I want to know any of her personal health issues.

  21. I hope Kelly is feeling better. It's good to see her looking joyful.
I am a little surprised to see her wearing a shorter length skirt and no leg coverings. (It's not the modest style I'm used to seeing).
I hope her health continues to improve.

  22. Kelly you look Great! Have you tried taking probiotics? I take them and it keeps the heartburn away and keeps my GERD doing Great.

  23. I'm assuming none of the family reads this blog, I hope they don't due to so many negative personal comments on here for each and every picture/post. It would be very discouraging to read. It takes 9 positive comments to try to make up for 1 negative comment in life in general! I TRULY LOVE THIS FAMILY therefore I could NEVER think of anything to say negative of them or even want to! People if you don't have anything praise worthy or encouraging please don't say anything at all!

    1. Nope, they willingly put their life in the public eye. So therefore we have every right to critique their lifestyle. If they don’t want to be criticized, stopping being on tv and telling the public every detail of your life.

    2. I don't get a "right" to criticize someone unkindly just because they're in public.

  24. Honestly, I don't see much of a difference in her appearance other than the fact that she dumped those old canvas shoes she always wears. The fact that Kelly was pregnant so many times over DID exacerbate her GERD condition. Her physician said so. This is a fact. Perhaps if she had a more traditional amount of children, she would not have needed the procedure as her GERD would not have been so severe. So.....her choice to have baby after baby did affect her health in a negative way. For her, a medical fact. I do hope in any case, that she is feeling better and stays that way.

    1. So what if it did? They didn’t choose to have children or not have children based on possible health conditions. GERD seems to be fairly common, and I would imagine most of the people who have it didn’t have 19 children. We all make choices in life that affect our health in one way or another. Isn’t it a blessing that we can make our own decisions about our health and how many children we want to have?

  25. Sometimes, you have to accept the negative along with the positive. That is the reality of reality television. The Bates family is a wonderful example of devotion to Christ and family, but they are not without flaws just like everyone else.

  26. I agree with the opinion that if you put yourself out there on TV and take money for it, you have to take the 'bad with the good'. This type of action naturally invites all kinds of opinions and statements about you and your family. The Bates family aren't entitled to being treated with kit gloves. Just like anyone else, they should expect to be critiqued, criticized as well as complimented for their lifestyle...which is what they SOLD to television and the rest of the media....which, BTW, they didn't allow in their own home when their children were growing up until it PAID THEM.

    1. They've actually said they don't make money from the show. I might double check my sources if I were you.

  27. I highly DOUBT that the Bates do this show for free. Networks PAY their actors for their performances. I would check my sources if I were YOU. Please don't believe that they are not compensated. Of course they are. UP runs just like TLC and pays for each episode with $$$ and perks for episode content.

  30. Well I wouldn't expect them to do the show for free, I just mean every family needs to make a living for their family.

  32. What type of surgery was it that corrects GERD?
