Don't Fence Me In

Listen to the talented Lawson Bates perform "Don't Fence Me In," a song written in 1934 by Cole Porter and Robert Fletcher (video and lyrics below).

"Don't Fence Me In"
Wildcat Kelly, lookin' mighty pale
Was standin' by the Sherriff's side
And when that Sherriff said, "I'm sending you to jail"
Wildcat raised his head and cried

Oh, give me land, lots of land under starry skies above
Don't fence me in
Let me ride through the wide open country that I love
Don't fence me in

Let me be by myself in the evenin' breeze
And listen to the murmur of the cottonwood trees
Send me off forever but I ask you please
Don't fence me in

Just turn me loose, let me straddle my old saddle
Underneath the western skies
On my cayuse, let me wander over yonder
Till I see the mountains rise

I want to ride to the ridge where the west commences
And gaze at the moon till I lose my senses
I can't look at hobbles and I can't stand fences
Don't fence me in

  3. I really enjoyed that! (My 3 year old did too - we watched it twice and would still be watching it if he had his way. :) )

  4. So this is totally random and I am NOT usually one to try and play match maker, but I couldn't help but think this last night. I was watching the Willis family after the Duggars last night and kept thinking how Lawson would make beautiful music with Jessica the oldest in their family of 12 children. The Willis family is also from TN.

  6. Lawson always comes across as funny and genuine - one of my favourite Bates!
He is a good amateur singer but, if he wants to take it further, I agree with Annette - he needs some coaching.

  7. I wonder if he understands the background and subtext of this song. Probably not going to make a good husband to any girl if he does.
