'Tis the Season for Surprises' Recap

Bringing Up Bates "'Tis the Season for Surprises"

  • Katie gives Ellie, Addallee, and Callie a hair curling tutorial. “When Katie leaves, it’s going to be very sad,” says Addee. “I’m just going to cry the whole week after.”
  • Zach comes over to help Gil and some of the boys hang Christmas lights. Nathan arrives and introduces Esther to the family.
  • “She seems like a very sweet girl,” says Zach. “Seems like she loves Nathan a lot, and it definitely seems like Nathan loves her, so super excited to watch them come rolling in.”
  • Esther is also from a big family, so she is right at home with the super-sized Bates crew. “The more, the merrier,” says Esther. “I love it.”
  • The couples get together for a bonfire. The Websters are in town, so everyone is together. Nathan and Esther tell the story of how they met at a mutual friend’s wedding. Nathan says Esther had the bluest eyes he had ever seen. They started texted and calling, and about a week later, Nathan told her he wanted to be more than friends. That was a year ago. “Going public with my family is kind of like going public with the world,” says Nathan.
  • Later at Zach and Whitney’s house, the kids help decorate gingerbread men (or, rather, “genderbread” men). Josie, Kelton, and Willow have a photographer take their photo as they release confetti cannons with either pink or blue.
  • The Bates family gathers for their Christmas celebration. Everyone but Tori and Bobby’s family is healthy and able to attend. Taryn takes outdoor family pictures. After the group photo, the reveals start. Josie and Kelton hand Kelton’s father an ornament that says “Baby Girl: Hazel Sloane Balka.”
  • Zach hands his parents and Whitney’s parents a box of gingerbread men with no icing. “Wait, where’s the color?” screams Kelly. Zach jokingly apologizes and brings out the blue gingerbread men.
  • Erin makes a big announcement on behalf of Tori and Bobby. She gives Gil and Kelly a placard that says “Making room for a new little one: Charlotte Raine.”
  • “[Bobby] will be a good girl dad,” says Tori. “I can’t say I’m going to be a good girl mom, but I will try my hardest.”
  • “Christmas is a magical time of year,” says Nathan, “And I can’t wait for every Christmas to come, from here on out. And I’m very confident they’re all going to be with Esther.”

  1. I haven’t seen the show yet. Is Tori being modest and doesn’t want to brag when says she can’t if she’ll be a good girl mom. Or is she really uncertain. She’s sure Bobby will be a good dad to a girl.

    1. I think it’s just that Tori isn’t really a girly-girl. She has said in the past she is a tomboy.

    2. Not necessary. I had three boys then a girl, and I felt intimidated at the thought of parenting a girl. It is different in some ways, not all.

    3. Tori is such a tomboy! She’s not a girly-girl, so she meant it might be hard for her to relate to a daughter! Plus it can be hard to imagine raising a girl when you’ve only had sons so far! I’m sure she’ll do great though- she IS a girl herself!

    4. Tori is a sweet girl but over the years has expressed lack of confidence in her ability to do things.
Unfortunately, someone else in her family usually ended up doing what was rightfully hers to carry out. This was especially evident in the time before her wedding. She basically opted out of doing anything and turned it all over to her sisters and Mother. I never understood why she didn’t wait to get married a few months when her schooling was overand step up to her responsibilities.

  2. I always enjoy watching Bringing Up Bates, but this episode with it’s 18 commercials, was not cohesive as most other episodes have been. I realize part of it was possibly filmed during the first year of Covid and it must have been difficult to even film or have family members film. Loved the color of Kelly’s hair and great make-up!

  3. I'm glad Nathan and Esther are in a courtship. Esther seemed very nice. I can't wait to see their relationship blossom.
I was interested in seeing all the gender reveals. I thought they were amazing. I can't wait for this June.

  4. Honestly I don’t really see much of a difference with being a parent to girls or to boys. I don’t get why people make such a big deal about being a “boy mom” or a “girl dad”.

    1. 🤣 4 boys, 1 girl, there's a difference.

    2. I totally agree!! I can't fathom being a woman finding out I'm having a daughter and being intimidated after all I'm female myself! Maybe Tori (and others who feel that way) isn't confident/comfortable in her own womanliness/femininity?

    3. I’d never heard that difference stated before.

    4. We raised 2 daughters and a son. We did not raise them according to their gender. Our son had a doll to prepare him for fatherhood. Our daughters hunted and fished, especially with their dad. All 3 children grew up to be responsible individuals whether they were at work or at home.

    5. Whether you "raise them according to their gender" or not, there are differences in boys and girls, inherently, especially when you reach the teen years and the hormones start going a little crazy. My daughter reacts much differently than her brothers, and she always has.

  5. Personally, I hoped for boys. My mother was verbally and physically abusive, so I didn't have a good experience with a mother-daughter relationship. I don't know that I would have been a good mother to a daughter. God was wise when He gave me 2 sons.

  6. Is parenting a boy and a girl so vey different? Love, affection, guidance, boundaries. . . it's the same for both boys and girls.

    1. The emotional needs differ to a large degree. I was a public school teacher for 35 years and raised a son and daughter of my own. I've always felt that to a large extent, girls can be challenging in ways that boys are not and vice versa.

    2. I agree with 3:41. Four boys and one girl in my family, and there is a big difference.

  7. While I think too much emphasis is placed on the girls to look beautiful with perfect hair and makeup, Ellie seems so mature and composed. Those qualities are much more important than curling hair and flawless makeup.

  8. I hope Nathan proposes soon!
