Update on Carlin's Health

Most of you know that Carlin has had major health issues for the past year. On this journey, she has been to countless doctors appointments, endured dozens of tests, and even spent time in the hospital. She hasn't been able to drive, so she and Evan have had to rearrange their lives to make accommodations. They just posted a video that includes a health update for curious fans. The two biggest questions on their minds right now are whether Carlin will be able to drive eventually and whether she will be able to have more children. Based on their video updates, Evan's attitude is one of complete selflessness and support for his wife, and Carlin has endured these health struggles with positivity, grace, and trust in God.

  1. Evan has been a wonderful example of a truly good man. He's easy to love that's for sure!

  3. I’ve enjoyed this show until I realized that your girls are being raised up to just marry and produce babies.

    1. Not true. They have free will. This is only your opinion. It is lovely to see relationships between a man an woman that actually commit to God, each other, and then marry and have children...in that order too.

    2. I've been watching the Bates since they first appeared on TV in 19 Kids and Counting. I now keep up with them via YouTube. You must not be aware that Carlin got a Bachelor's Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and Music Education (she plays the piano and sings). Also, she and Whitney Bates own Bates Sisters Boutique which is a clothing boutique that sells beautiful clothing that is more on the modest side. They are very successful. Whitney and Zach bought a farm and renovated a house on it while Evan and Carlin bought their first home and renovated it. Carlin was not raised to just marry and have babies.

    3. Degrees don’t mean much when the college itself it’s accredited it’s a strict religious school with no real usable degrees but better than nothing

    4. 5:10, first of all, it's primarily a college for people going into the ministry, so yes, their degrees are very usable. Secondly, not every secular employer requires an accredited degree. Thirdly, they have programs like the cosmetology one that Josie went through to get a job.

    5. @10:16 I think it's lovely to see people who have not been indoctrinated by patriarchal/authoritarian theology, such as IBLP.

    6. 10:13 Look up the job placement rate in field of study for Crown College graduates. It's quite dismal. I have relatives who graduated from a similar institution that was not accredited. It was very difficult for them to find employment in their field of study.

    7. Where does the data come from, 5:04?

  4. I have not watched their latest video and hope Carlin can soon drive again so she can be independent and Evan can get a job using his skills he learned in trade school becoming an electrician (it's a shame he has to waste the occupation he learned and work instead for the BSB). I don't see why she can't have more kids when she feels ready. Most women with seizures can have healthy babies if they are monitored closely by their doctor and take meds that are safe. Though it's possible she might have to have a natural birth as another epidural might cause a seizure during labor and delivery (though I don't know if that's true or not).

  5. I don’t think her health issues are life-threatening however.

  6. I can't believe with all that going on, she's even talking about getting pregnant again. Girl, where are your priorities?!

    1. Especially since her problems started when she had her baby, so they are clearly connected.

    2. I don't get it either. Until she recovers her health, pregnancy should be off the table.

  7. Carlin needs to focus on her health issues and recover and stop fretting about if she'll be able to have more children.

    1. Why would she even think about having more children if she's seizing and her husband has to stay home and babysit her already. Why would she put her body through pregnancy and add another child to look after when she can't even look after herself. I don't get it. She's a walking example of a dire need for responsible birth control.

    2. @3:53-having babies is priority one for this family!

  8. It’s perfectly natural to want more children, not to mention, a God-given desire. Why judge her for it?

  9. Throughout this whole journey they both have portrayed complete selflessness and trust in God and His perfect plan, may they be an example for all of us.

Thankful the update seems to be positive for the most part! Prayers for their future!

    1. Statements like that make me sad for all couples struggling and for all people coping with illness and loss. Maybe they trusted in God too yet were severely disappointed. If you're going to claim God's plan gives us happiness, then you must include how it gives us heartbreak and tears too, and makes a lot of us feel like God doesn't care about us. Also, there are some people who work very hard to overcome adversities that come their way, and they should get credit for their hard work. God didn't twitch a finger and make it all go away for them. Let's give credit where credit is due.

    2. Well, God's plan is that He works all things together for good to those who love Him, to the end that they be conformed to the image of His Son. Pain is there because of the effects of sin, ours or someone else's.

      Delete
    3. @11:50 Your answer doesn't make sense because we're ALL supposed to be sinners. So God couldn't pick favors to bestow on some people and not on others based on that. You also don't explain why some people who love God and Jesus with all their hearts still don't get happiness.

      Delete
    4. I never said we aren't all sinners. We are. Happiness depends on circumstances. You can choose joy no matter what your circumstances are. I've learned that in my own life.

  10. I am saddened by the rude comments here and on YouTube about Carlin’s health. She specified on the video that she just wants to know if having kids will ever be on the plate again. I think it is 100% reasonable to wonder about the future and if she and Evan need to adjust their previous dream about family size. They are trying to manage their expectations in light of her health issues. They do choose to share publicly, but people can also choose to treat them kindly.

    ReplyDelete
  11. She's not fretting, it's just one of her priorities but of course her health is her main concern, I'm sure if it comes to it she'll be fine with two kids.

  12. I hope she gets better soon. I haven't been able to drive for several years. With a little planning I get where I need to go without disrupting everyone else's lives. I use public transportation and medical transportation services to get to appointments, have groceries and many other things delivered to my house. No, it's not as convenient as being able to drive myself but it works. Evan shouldn't have to give up working to always take her everywhere.

    1. I highly doubt there is public transportation in their small, rural town. It's not like NYC where you can just jump on a bus or train or hail a cab on every corner. Lyft or Uber is probably not even readily available in that part of the country.

    1. Why would a woman injured in a car accident want to dance again? People’s dreams don’t stop cause of a health issue. And don’t bring up adoption cause he health issue would be an issue with no label of an illness and seizures, there are medical checks they do on people wanting to adopt. She isn’t under her parents or a pastors thumb. The decision would be from her. If she gets pregnant they will deal with it. If they wait they will deal with the delay. If they never have another they will deal with it. It’s okay to want no kids, to want 3, to want 20 or to just see how many happen. It’s a free country. People are fertile for 30 years. Some years more likely to conceive than others.

    2. I know someone who wanted to adopt but could ' t with her medical problems the state would let her go thing she didn't she died so after

  14. i agree with other focous on your health over having a large family. having a large family leads to many health problems for women. Which I am sure kelly or michelle will never talk about Erin is going to keep having kids like her mom. Kids are a blessing but you again have to know your limit as a women.

    1. What on earth? Very few women have very many babies in countries with modern medical care. You are stating as fact a scientific finding that is impossible to know. Human females are fertile for 30 years. Some years more fertile than others. To suggest one or two pregnancies of 10 months is all the human being can manage safety just makes no sense. There is a minimum 12 year period where it’s optimal. 20-32. That is at least 4 babies with extended periods of breastfeeding reducing conception chances.

      Delete
    2. That is all a lot of people can manage though. Most women can’t manage more than 1-3 pregnancies/kids for sooooooo many different reasons. Everyone doesn’t need large families or even want that

      Delete
  15. She has an unresolved medical problem. Her priorities are out of whack if she wants another pregnancy at this time.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I agree. It didn't sound as if she was asking if pregnancy was a possibility, she was thinking another pregnancy was a given.

      Delete
    2. She wants the ability to get pregnant. Not to have more kids than her mom. Cause she wants another one. Isn’t that allowed anymore?

      Delete
  16. Everyone makes their own decisions about family size. Just because it’s different than what you want doesn’t mean it’s bad. Some people struggle to have even one or two children. Others raise many well. It’s a personal decision and sometimes dictated by health.
Personally I know I’m not in a season to get married/have children until my health is better. But Carlin is stable. So it’s up to them, and as they said in the video it’s not like they plan to rush out and get pregnant immediately. They just want to know if they ever can, because they want more than 2 children.

  17. God bless you both

  18. All the comments about what this couple should or should not do is irrelevant. It sounds as though they have sought advice from doctors and are simply considering the future, not that they are going to start trying to get pregnant immediately. I am troubled by ANY religious doctrine that teaches birth control is a sin or displeasing to God. No woman should be pressured, intimidated, or instructed that she must be open to having as many children as possible, as pregnancy and childbirth pose inherent risks to the health, life and well-being of a woman. IMO, contraception provides women with a means to have some control during their reproductive years, which is a good thing.

  19. With the seizures and her blood clotting problems , I pray Carlin waits for more babies. A boy and a girl so far is a huge blessing. Her sister Michael would be overjoyed with one baby!! I’m wishing nothing but good health for Carlin. She’s such a sweet girl with a sweet husband.

  25. I was diagnoised with seizures (epilepsy) 10 years ago following a winding journey ( I don't they believed I was having seizures at first until I had my EEG which captured a seizure - this is not common aparently)
I've been lucky to have been seizure free ( on medication) for many years now so live a mostly normal life - apart from having to take tablets twice a day. Most epilepsy medications are relatively safe in pregnancy ( I was diagnoised in Ireland where there is a longstanding observation study following up on women with epilepsy who get pregnant [the United Kingdom and Ireland Epilepsy and Pregnancy Registries are prospective, observational databases in which individuals who are pregnant and have epilepsy are followed to determine the safety of all seizure drugs taken during pregnancy]. One of the first thing my neurologist did was say if I planned to get pregnant to let them know - they check you are on the best medication (He said they normally try the safest drugs for pregnant women in their female patients, so they don't need to change). He said the only big thing normally is having to change the dosage.

It has been so long now since my last seizure that my Dad forgot I had epilepsy once! I hope my situation can show that you can have epilepsy and get back to an essentially 'normal' life.
