Trace Bates' Surprise Proposal

  1. SURPRISE proposal? Your boyfriend takes you to a roof where there are a million lit candles and flowers and a bunch of people hiding (not so much) behind the pillars with video cameras and you are surprised about what's happening? Then there's a gown that fits you perfectly that you change into and you shoot the whole thing again (while people run around relighting candles) and it's supposed to have all been a surprise?

    1. I know. These proposals are so staged and then it's a "surprise". Of course she knew it was coming.

    2. 12:07 I too cracked up over this. But I guess that is what you do when you are "famous".

    3. All surprise events have a point where it's revealed. The surprise was, up until she saw the flowers and candles, she didn't know it was a proposal she was headed to.

    4. It was. I guess by the time she saw all the candles and flowers she guessed what it was, but it still is a surprise. Trace picked that dress and gave it to her after he had proposed and Lydia was told she was going there to work, to shoot something for Josie's boutique, which she does often.

    5. Honestly, she doesn't seem surprised at all. It's all staged.

    6. When your boyfriend tells you there is a job lined up for you as a photographer, and you come in your work clothes to take pictures of someone else, and get proposed to instead, yes, the proposal is a surprise!!!

  4. Where are these people getting the money for extravagant proposals? Money from the show isn't coming in anymore and last I knew, Trace was training to be a police officer. I haven't heard that he's been doing anything else. Just too much unrealistic "over the top" performances for me.

    1. Beats me. If your sole employment is as a police officer, you sure don't have the money for this kind of thing.

    2. waste of a bunch of good candles too that wouldn't stay lit in the wind

    3. Trace and Lydia just got a you tube channel so I suppose they will be trying to make money through that, plus Lydia may start promoting products on social media like the others do. That seems to be what is maintaining the clothes, hair, make-up, shoes, travel, nails, coffee, etc lifestyle

    4. Gather 'round kids and let Grandma tell you of a time when people got real jobs to support themselves and didn't record or broadcast every moment of their lives for money. You'll be amazed that life was lived wonderfully like that for thousands of years, and that people were happy.

    5. @11:10 How ironic that everything you mentioned is fleeting and superficial, when values were supposed to be what this family was all about.

    6. Lots of magazine appearances, YouTube channels and savings from the show may help fund some of these events. Also, isn’t another channel picking up the show? That network may be paying for all this fancy footage!!!

  5. Awe so precious and good song for it!

  6. You can tell is less elaborate than the other proposals when the show was paying

    1. She’s a photographer and he works with Chad and might have savings from the show. I don’t understand, either, how some of these Bates couples make ends meet?

  9. I love the proposal. Wish we could have heard what was said. Also love that she changed and had her hair and makeup done and took more pictures. What great memories they will share when they look back at the pictures/video of their engagement. I also love the sweet kiss that Trace gave her on the side of her face. May God bless their union.

  10. Trace just happened to have access to an evening gown in her size, that fitted her perfectly? Did he take one from her closet and she didnt' notice? It doesn't make sense.

    1. Maybe she has modeled for the sisters' boutique before or maybejustmaybe he asked her mom to help him. It's really not that hard to pull off.

  11. Dressing up to do a fake do-over of the proposal seems so unnecessary, and attention-seeking. Also noticed the full frontal hug. I don't care if they kiss or what they do pre-marriage, but it seems that the Bates sons no longer any rules, but the daughters still do. What a religion!

    1. You're mistaking the Duggars' hug rule for the Bates' non-rule about hugs.

    2. Grown up sons and daughters who don’t live with their parents are no longer subject to their parents rules. Also, side hugs are a Duggar thing. The Bates allow frontal hugs for their daughters.

    3. They allow a lot more for their sons!

    4. 5:13 So, the Bates sons can leave home before marriage, but the daughters cannot?

    5. The Bates always had fewer rules and all the daughters gave regular hugs to their boyfriends and fiances. Alyssa, among of the first to get married, talked on her youtube channel about kissing before marriage. I don’t really think there is a double standard at all.

  12. Where did this take place?

  13. Oh my, that is so sweet! I love the song that was playing on the video. I've always thought Trace is a guy with such a big heart and I'm so happy he found his true love. She seems like a real sweetheart and they seem so right for each other. All the best to both of them!

  14. Watched the video and thought their engagement was sweet and interesting. Wonder if it was Trace's idea to dress up in formal attire for the photo shoot for the media or if it was the magazine's idea to make the engagement look authentic and fancy and not casual. I mean who cares if Lydia was wearing a pair of pants and a shirt and jacket with boots? It's the thought and moment that counts. Hope to see more content on their channel as they plan for their big day (Q & A,purchasing and maybe flipping their first home, dress shopping, etc.) I especially want to hear what Lydia's German accent sounds like when she speaks English and maybe learn some German words and traditions. A lot of people where asking in the comments on YouTube for them to make another video of their engagement with the audio included instead of the song in the background.

    1. Apparently it's the image and appearance of the moment that counts more. That's the one that sells. What are the Bates kids going to do when they no longer have a spotlight to perform for? Stand around stunned that there's no audience?

  15. I'm tired of these "surprise" proposals where the setting, their hair, their nails, and clothes are all perfect, plus everyone is there. What's wrong with just asking someone privately if they want to get married? You don't need all this hoopla and you don't even need a ring. Just ask, agree on an answer, and take it from there. Seems everyone tries to outdo each other these days with elaborate proposals. That's not what true love or marriage needs. You don't start a fireworks show with the finale anyway. Who are they trying to impress?

    1. If they really wanted to do it another way, there's nothing stopping them.
