'Home Sweet Home and Nathan's Love' Recap

Bringing Up Bates "Home Sweet Home and Nathan's Love"

  • Tori and Bobby have just moved into their first home. They had been looking for a while but hadn’t seen much on the market. And then they found a place for sale just two houses down from Zach and Whitney, and they snapped it up. Tori and Bobby give Zach, Whitney, Michael, and Brandon a tour.
  • Tori jokes that Chad and Erin are coming up with her design and decorations. Chad is planning to build a back porch, which Tori is very excited about. She laughs when she tells her sister and sister-in-law that she made Bobby put his clothes in the boys’ large closet so she could have their closet all to herself.
  • Later, the Bates and Stewarts take a trip to Zoo Knoxville for Layla’s first birthday. And in Florida, Alyssa and John are assembling baby items for Maci’s arrival. “You would think that after three kids, we would be like completely prepared, but for some reason, setting up a baby swing this time around and a car seat was more complicated than it looked,” says Alyssa.
  • Alyssa’s first three daughters were born at a birth center with a midwife, but because of the heart complications and surgeries that she had, she is delivering this baby at a hospital.
  • “I feel like we’ve kind of reversed the roles of what most people do,” says Alyssa. “A lot of people get married and wait a while to have kids. We’re going to have our fourth kid, and I’m 26. And by the time we’re 40, we’re going to have like grown kids in college, and we’ll be able to enjoy grandkids.”
  • Meanwhile, Paine Construction is busy building out the new retail space for the Bates Sisters Boutique. And Zach is now working in Gil’s tree business.
  • “I would love to be 56 moving around like my dad, instead of 33 moving around like I am right now,” says Zach.
  • “My dad is definitely getting older, but he is still the man,” says Carlin. “The guy’s a rock. He is like still killing it. He’s still all of our heroes.”
  • Nathan, who isn’t usually in Tennessee, is home and helps out on a tree job. During a break, Nathan reveals to his dad and brothers that he is hoping to get engaged in the spring. “I think I’m ready to take the next step and change her from a girlfriend to a fiancĂ©,” he says. He hopes to pop the question in the Bahamas.

  1. It is very encouraging to hear that Alyssa envisions her daughters in college. I hope it actually happens!

    2. 9:02, or just a quick spell check. I doubt they're going to be using many French words on here.

  3. What is taking Nathan and his girlfriend to the Bahamas? Is it a Church Mission trip? Or are they going for vacation, unchaperoned?

    1. Should be able to go on there own are adults . Not the end of the world.

    2. Nathan was planning on flying her himself. No mention of chaperones yet. Its just in the "chatting with the guys" phase.

    3. It seems the Bates guys can be with their girlfriends without chaperones.

    4. @1:28- ummm not for the Bates gang-remember no pre marital anything before marriage!!!

    5. Nathan is almost 30 years old!!They required chaperones when the dating kids were all under 18!Good grief!

  4. I feel sorry for these fellas who marry the Bates girls. Tori "made Bobby put his clothes in the boys closets." I guess the men chose it, and now they have to deal with it.

  5. What's with this obsession with going to college?? And also telling other people what is right and what to do?? A lot of people who went to college don't actually work in the field they learned. They end up working in jobs that don't require a degree. As long as they grow up and work in what they like and are good at that would be great.

    1. You mean they get an education and don't monetize it? Aren't there other reasons for getting an education? What a transactional view of education.

    2. College is so much more than an education to find a job. It is a great transition time for young adults. College is a step toward independence before being totally living independently on their own. They are out of their mom and dad’s house but don’t have the responsibility of paying a mortgage and supporting a family. It’s a time to meet new people from diverse cultures and walks of life. The door opens to many learning opportunities that can lead them to discover what their passion is. College prepared me for life in so many ways in addition to educating me in my career field. It gave me a confidence in myself and my abilities that I didn’t have prior to entering university. It helped shape the person I still am today. I wouldn’t trade that for anything.

    3. Right? Not to mention all the people deeply in debt for a degree they can't get a job with. People need to realize that college is not the answer for every single person.

  6. Nathan said he isn't usually home in Tennessee so I was wondering where he lives most of the time? I think he's still a flight instructor.

  7. I enjoyed last night's episode, but - as many fans have mentioned - I wish the show was an hour long. So many topics of interest can not be shared completely in just over 20 minutes. Hope it can be extended.

  8. John will be 40 in 8+ years. His kids will range from 8-14. They won't have any grandkids then, or anyone in college (unless they have a prodigy). What does she mean?

    1. Alyssa is only 26 so she probably means herself.

    2. When she’s 40. She’s several years younger than John. And had Allie at 20.

    3. If she home schools, they could advance faster than traditional schooling. But it was probably just a little inflated statement considering she said it in a jokingly way.

    4. Alyssa is 26 having her 4th child (at the time of the episode), meaning she was approx 21-22 years old having her 1st child.
22 to 40 is 18 years, meaning it's entirely possible to have her oldest starting college as Alyssa turns 40.
And then being in her early 40's, all the girls would be finishing Gr 12 and potentially going to college.

As to grandkids, it's also entirely possible that they could have grandkids while still in their 40's. If Allie and Lexi start a family young like Alyssa did, she could easily be a grandma at 45 year old.

    5. Alyssa was 20 when Allie was born. In 14 years, when Alyssa is 40, Allie will be 20, so it wouldn't be a stretch to think that she could be in college and have a baby not long after that. Alyssa could very well be a grandma by her early 40's.

  9. Obviously Nathan and Esther are already engaged then.

    1. They aren't engaged. But they apparently go on vacation together.

    2. I’ve noticed that her left ring finger has been “hidden” in recent pictures. So, maybe they are engaged!

      Delete
    3. Why obviously? We’re still in spring time until June 21st. Also, his Plans could’ve changed, and they haven’t announced anything.

      Delete
    4. Even an engaged couple shouldn't vacation together, if your younger sister is required to have a chaperone to go on a date.

      Delete
    5. She would know all the details about it. Like, who wants the girlfriend to know that when and where even generally?? I guess nobody is certain.
I think she may be on a girls trip now as a bachelorette party.

  10. I wonder if Kelly Jo created plans and decor for a baby's nursery? Or if she just put a new baby in its crib and went on with her day? I like the old fashioned ways and the focus on what is truly important.

    1. Are you saying decorating your home is a bad thing? Making your house a home is an old-fashioned tradition.

      Delete
    2. Completely agree @1:33pm

      Delete
    3. Decorating in a reasonable way is fine, but the Bates women make it into this huge project. That is wrong, IMO, when your energies should be spent on your children and spouse, or those in need.

      Delete
    4. 11:26, your children can learn about decorating along with you. You can decorate with your spouse. You can help someone in need on the way to the store. You can have life balance.

  11. So, where does Nathan live???

    ReplyDelete
  12. Carlin's statement indicated to me that she did not know how old her father is.
Where is Nathan living since he stated he's not in Tennessee very much. No information was given on that. I thought the unmarried children, no matter their age, were required to live at home until marriage. What happened to that?

    1. Yes, Grace; what did happen to all those rules???

      Delete
    2. Where did you hear that? Lawson was in Nashville, remember?

      Delete
    3. On the episode where she and Evan were getting their marriage license, Carlin didn’t know her father’s name wasn’t Gil (it’s William Gilvin).

      Delete
    4. I’ve never heard them say they were required to live at home until marriage. I think people make assumptions.

      Delete
    5. When did the Bates tell you that rule?

  13. I love watching the show... That is my only comment...

  14. Did Zach leave his job in the sheriff's office or is he working there and at his dad's tree business?

    1. Yes. He left his sheriffs job and is working his dads tree business.
