'A Dance With Dad & A Wedding to Plan' Recap

Bringing Up Bates "A Dance With Dad & A Wedding to Plan"

  • Carlin, Kelly, Erin, Everly, and Whitney are searching for a wedding venue for Carlin and Evan. They are planning for 600-800, with the potential of up to 1,000 guests. They visit Whitestone Inn, which is where Chad proposed to Erin. Carlin loves it and is ready to commit, but after visiting Castleton Farms, she starts imagining having her wedding there. Vineyards, white pillars, and fancy stairs—it’s absolutely beautiful.
  • Back at the house, Gil, Zach, Nathan, and some of the kids assemble a doghouse that they purchased for their new dog, JJ (Johnny Jr). The project takes only 35 minutes, and the dog loves his new house.
  • Next up is Carlin’s dance lesson with Gil, in preparation for the daddy-daughter dance that she wants to have at her wedding. “So Carlin actually convinced Dad to go to dance lessons,” says Erin. “I do not know how she did that.”
  • Carlin jokes that they are going to start with a slow dance and then “crank it up.” Of course that’s not going to happen on Gil’s watch. “With dancing also comes bad chemistry that happens sometimes on the dance floor, so we never did the dance because it came with a lot of baggage, but this is not that kind of dancing,” explains Gil. Did you know that the Bates dad was prom king in high school?
  • “In past years, we avoided all dancing,” says Kelly. “Carin has assured us, she just wants this to be a wholesome, very thoughtful type of dance. And the more she talked about it, the more we want her to have her dreams.”
  • “Growing up, we did not do dancing,” says Zach. “I think Mom and Dad are really excited for it, and it’s interesting how the family’s evolved.”
  • Kelly accompanies Gil and Carlin to their dance lesson at Dance Tonight. Kelly says she is picturing what she calls a flowy “Ginger Rogers” dance. During the lesson, Gil dances with Carlin, while Kelly dances with the instructor. “I’m not a person with a lot of rhythm,” admits Gil. “I don’t’ want to be the double left-footed guy out there.”
  • But Gil is determined to get the hang of it. “If it makes her feel that special, it’s worth trying to do it,” says the father of the bride. “I want it to be a special day.”
  • Later, Michael and Brandon, along with Gil and Kelly, visit a rental house, owned by a friend and located in the town of Norris. “It’s been a matter of prayer for several months now, the potential of us moving home for me to go back to school,” says Michael.
  • The house is a lot smaller than the place they are moving from in Chicago. “It’s definitely a downsize,” says Brandon. “Cute little place, but it’s definitely smaller.” It’s a great area, though. The Keilens are hoping to move by May, which is only a couple months away.
  • “My heart is just so full now right now because my little girl is going to be coming home,” says Kelly.

  1. If there is a good, wholesome kind of dancing, why didn't they allow that kind all along?

    1. There has always been wholesome dancing such as the waltz. I’m shocked that the Bates didn’t already know this.

    2. I echo Zach's comment; they have evolved.

    3. Actually, the waltz was scandalous in its time.

  2. This was so sweet<3 Gil is such a loving & doting Dad. The world needs more dads like him. God bless him & the entire Bates’ family. They’re so precious. I always end up laughing & crying during the episodes & feeling so uplifted & encouraged by their family.

  3. They should put the girls in ballet classes!

  4. What is the point of having a dog if it is outside? Bring the dog in and let it be part of the family. Yes, they can get in to things and chew on them, etc..., but they give so much love and happiness.

    1. Yes!!!! Don't get a pet if you can't treat it fairly.

    2. Plus every properly trained dog will behave well. I think they’re too lazy to train and they’ll rather just leave him outside which is sad

  5. I wonder how this wedding was afforded at Castleton Farms? Seems like an expensive place, and in the past, weddings were always on a strict budget. I remember the scene with Michael at the table with Gil and Kelly discussing her wedding budget, and it was a very serious conversation. I think Carlin must have blown the budget!!!!

    1. UP Tv probably helped pay for it.

  6. MO- Okay- Please correct me if I'm wrong but I've known people of the Southern Baptist faith and I have always been told that they do NOT dance, drink, or play cards. Period, no exceptions. I respect their views and would never plan any of those activities if they were my guests. This is really odd to me that The Bates Family would change their mind about any of these activities that the church discourages for a TV show or to look more "in line" with things other people do. :o)

    1. I wholeheartedly agree. Just one of many ways they have changed. They seem to get more and more worldly with their view on things.

    2. Where in the Bible does it condemn dancing, especially between a married couple or father/daughter? These legalistic rules just boggle my mind. People just paint themselves into a very tight corner.

    3. MO- Okay- They drank wine in the Bible- So does that mean The Bates will serve it at their next reception? This is the teaching of their Church- They discourage drinking, dancing and playing cards, that's all I'm saying. :o)

    4. Haven’t y’all seen Footloose, Ren points out that they mention dancing for joy multiple times in the Bible.

    5. I find it so odd that neither of the parents were raised in the strict setting they are trying to bring their kids up in. Why do they homeschool? Just to be able to fully control their children and their environment?
Maybe Gil was scarred by what he saw at his high school prom and vowed nobody in his family would ever dance. Seems silly. Little kids naturally jump and dance around.

    6. The bible actually tells us to dance.
