'One Cap, Two Gowns' Recap

Bringing Up Bates "One Cap, Two Gowns?"

  • Carlin helps Tori pack for Bobby’s college graduation. She also lends Tori a few articles of clothing. “The people of the same size, they just have this real problem of stealing,” says Lawson. “It’s not stealing,” responds Nathan. “If clothes fit you and they’re in this house, hey, if you want them to be your clothes, you keep them somewhere else. But if you keep them in this house, it’s part of the family closet.”
  • “Tori and Nathan are our two that they’re like, ‘Oh it’s in the closet, it grabs for anybody,’” says Kelly.
  • Down in Florida, Alyssa and John show us a glimpse of their life with two kids. John works in his family’s air conditioning business, and both of them have a joint cleaning business on the side.
  • One particular evening, John comes home to watch the girls for the evening, and Alyssa immediately runs out to clean and doesn’t return home until after 9:00. At that point, John heads out to fix an A/C unit. “We’re going to stay right at two kids for right now,” says Alyssa.
  • “I think Alyssa learned a lot from cleaning big messes from this house,” says Judson, matter-of-factly.
  • Tori and Josie head down to Florida for the grad party. They kick off the trip with some disk golf. Josie plays on a team with Kelton Balka, a friend of Bobby’s who lives near the Bates and knew them before they knew Bobby.
  • “I was super excited to get to go with Tori to the graduation because one of my friends is actually graduating,” says Josie. “Kelton is a guy that I’m kind of talking to and getting to know, and he’s pretty great.”
  • “What’s it with all these special friends?” says Gil.
  • “We’re going to be seeing lots of Kelton and Bobby,” says Kelly. “Well I like them boys,” responds Gil, with a combined look of stress and joy written on his face.
  • The next day, Gil and Kelly and some of the kids show up for the party. “Bobby’s house is a lot different than our house,” comments Jackson. “Theirs is actually clean. I would be surprised if they didn’t mop this house more than once a day.” Bobby’s family lives in Tampa, in a gated community that sits on a lake.
  • “You’ve got nice things, we can break them,” quips Nathan.
  • Bobby is graduating with a youth ministry degree and will be moving up to Tennessee at the end of the summer. Kelton graduated with a degree in finance and is going to work in his uncle’s plumbing business in Tennessee.
  • During the party, Tori sneaks off with Bobby to give him his Bible. He loves it.

  2. I enjoyed seeing Alyssa and John with the girls. They all seem to be thriving in Florida. I'm sure many people were disappointed but I was glad when Alyssa said they were going to stay with just 2 kids or a while. It proves they are wise about their resources and time. They are my favorite couple.

    1. Accredited would be even better.... Pensacola Christian College is not accredited.

    2. PCC actually got accredited a few years ago. I didn't think it was either but was talking to someone who goes there the other day and he said it had been accredited for a few years now. Must be a relief for those who go there! :)

    3. Untrue. Used to not be accredited. I'm a graduate.

  4. If I were Kelly, I would be really embarrassed that my kids thought their house is not clean! If they don't like it, they should clean it better!

  5. I was glad to see Alyssa wearing pant/sweats to go to her cleaning job. When I heard them say 2 kids was it for awhile I said Amen. Finally some reality coming through. Not all of these kids will try to have 19 kids in this day & age. And it's okay with God.

    1. I was so proud of Alyssa and John in last night's episode. They are working hard to provide for their family. Alyssa is fully participating in the outside the home workforce. And they are so smart to wait a while before having another child. The stress is not so great as when you have a lot more kids, to for her to say "staying at 2, for now" means the door is open to more kids IF THEY CHOOSE. I just hope family doesn't put pressure on them to have more. I remember at Allie's first birthday party they were all asking her if she was pregnant again.

Also made so much sense for Alyssa to wear pants to her cleaning job. I think that is the first time she wore them on camera, IIRC.

    2. This is an "old fashioned"belief, but I don't believe in doing anything to prevent from having babies. If God want you to have or not have kids, it will happen because HE directs and HE allows things to happen according to HIS will.Nothing happens outside His will. Nobody said life was easy. Raising a family is hard work and a lot of money, but when we follow His will He provides:)

    3. God gave women a cycle and a brain for a reason. If we are supposed to have more children we can plan for it.

    4. Lauren, we also need to ask God to guide our decisions as well. We can't just decide we will do this or that because WE think it is sensible.

    5. I had a cleaning business for 10 years and wear a skirt everyday, I had horses, rode them every time with a skirt, The women on here that feel the need to praise another women for wearing pant, do you not think you have the problem, not the ones that wears skirt....This is crazy and a little sick, if you really think about it.

  8. I love this family!😘 It's my favorite show of all!!!! I was shocked to read two comments concerning John an allysa an their choice to not have anymore children For now. Sometimes God has a different plan for us than the one we have. And if so I am sure these kids will continue be excellent parents...no matter how many they have. Finally,it really isn't anyone's business how many children they have. John and Allysa are hard working an great parents. I love all of the Bates... Wonderful family,😘

    1. I agree, there is nothing wrong with using birth control, the Bible says use wisdom in all things. Wearing pants , there is nothing wrong with wearing pants I would hate to see a lady wear a dress and ride a horse lol

  10. I love when John and Alyssa wanted hugs and kisses from Allie before bed. My dad always said " Hugs and kisses all the time! That's the rule in this house". I couldn't help but think of that.
