Recap: "Doctor's Orders"

Tonight on Bringing Up Bates, "Doctor's Orders"...
  • Gil and Kelly sit down with Michaella to talk about the budget for her wedding. As they did for Erin and Alyssa and plan to do for each of their daughters, the Bates will give Michaella a sum of money for her wedding. If she and Brandon want to spend more, they will have to raise their own funds.
  • The Bates' extended family members have helped keep wedding costs down. Kelly's sister Kay is a baker, and her sister Kim owns a flower shop.
  • Kelly, Michaella, Erin, and Whitney search for a church that can accommodate 500-800 people and is available on the date Michaella and Brandon have chosen (August 15th). The couple's wedding colors-- pink and brown--also must look good inside the sanctuary.
  • The first church doesn't work with Michaella's colors. She really likes the second church, but Erin is convinced that it won't hold enough people. Kelly takes videos to send to Brandon.
  • "All of my family is very opinionated, and it can be very helpful, but at the same time, my list of important things doesn't necessarily match their list of important things," says Michaella.
  • Unfortunately, the ladies soon find out that church No. 2 is not available on August 15th. Michaella admits she is nervous because she and Brandon cannot change their date.
  • The third stop is Wallace Memorial, and everyone loves it. The church has a youth lock-in on August 15th which they have to figure out if they can work around. The Bates know that if it is God's will, the date will work out.
  • Meanwhile, Aunt Kay (also known as "Kay Kay") comes over to show the little ones how to decorate a cake. The kids especially enjoy eating the icing.
  • Before long, the cake decorating class turns into a food fight, which Kay admits she instigated. "I covered Kay Kay's glasses with icing, pink icing, so she couldn't see anymore," shares Callie, giggling.
  • "This was a very successful thing," says Kay. "It was very messy, but messy can be fun. You need to teach kids how to have fun in the kitchen and not make it a chore."
  • Erin wakes up early one morning with painful contractions, so she and Chad head to the hospital. The doctors give Erin medicine to stop the contractions, and they give the baby a steroid shot, in case he arrives early.
  • After those complications, Erin's doctor decides to schedule weekly appointments and ultrasounds. "It's hard for me not to live in fear," says Erin. "It's scary, and you just want to be sure that everything is okay."

  1. The batest don't seem to get the attention and care as the Duggars do. There are no individual pics or info. I love the bates they are fun and genuine. Seems like they deserve a lot more attention and care than they get.

    1. I agree. I am astonished that people rarely comment on this blog about this lovely family. I do love the Duggars, but I find the Bates' to be far more diverse and interesting in their personalities and interests. They just seem very genuine and without an agenda.

    2. Everything take a time. Once people start reading the blogs they will become more interested on this family. When they were on TCL the show was not.as good. The house was too small and even Kelly said she learned so much more from her first experience. This time around the show is so different and much better. Some of the children are now older and their lives are so interesting. I remember seeing the show on TLC and not being able to follow it well. Through the blogs I have been able to figure out who is who and their ages. Watching the show, I can see how the parents are very interesting. Gil 's outgoing and humorous ways have rubbed off on the kids. And Kelly' insights can be found among the children. Truly a Remarkable family. No acting. No stage performances. Impressed with seeing the kids being kids. Liked how Micheal had gotten angry and annoyed with Tori for touching/pushing her boyfriend Brandon about. Capturing real sister to sister relationship is very real. Thank you.UP.Just remember Bates, learn from the Duggers mistakes, don't perform for us, just be real. And don't change. Keep your humble roots. Don't allow money and increase life style change you. Don't let it change your family either, especially with the younger ones who will be growing up in this fame

    3. It will probably take time for people to catch on to the Bates show. How many people are aware of UP tv anyway? I never heard of UP tv before. I found it by flicking the channels when I was bored one night. We need to tell everyone about the Bates. Most things are learned by word of mouth. Start talking. I am.

  2. Do the Bates family go to a church? I guess when you don't have a home church, you shop for a church just for the wedding?

    3. They have a home church ! Their father is the Pastor ! It's a small church. And they hope it will grow. Their priorities is serving Christ and introducing Him to other people . They are the real deal.

    4. They needed to find a much larger church to hold a 1,000 people comfortably.

  3. Maybe this is all the social media type exposure the Bates family wants.
Considering all that has taken place within the Duggar family, this is probably in their best interest.

    1. Gil and Kelly center the show on their own family life. It is centered on their home. Kelly had her own blog and reached out to all fans when she had the time. She had provided an address to write to her directly. They are not too private. Kelly has revealed a lot about herself. The most heart breaking thing is the void she had over the loss of her father who also happened to be a Pastor. She did not come to know the Lord personally until she was in her teens and Gil was also a teen when he personally came to know the Lord. They are an honest couple. Very warm and loving. They love their fans and they pray for those who have prayer requests. They acknowledge their children are not perfect and do not hide anything. They are of a humble spirit. I hope the game does not change or influence them.
