Sewing 11 Prairie Dresses

"My mom pours her heart into I Love You Day, and I feel like my siblings do, too. My mom starts planning months in advance."

-Michael Kielen

After seeing all the beautiful costumes that the Bates wore for their Little House on the Prairie themed I Love You Day celebration, many of you have wondered who made them. If you guessed that Michael played a big role, you're correct, but the work was far from drudgery for her.

In their latest YouTube video, Michael and Brandon Keilen discuss their preparation for the Valentine's Day party. Michael, who loves sewing, says it was "like a dream come true" to have an opportunity to design and create 11 dresses. While she made the outfits, Brandon built a wagon to give the kids rides during the party.

Still, the Keilens insist that matriarch Kelly Bates is the real MVP when it comes to preparing for I Love You Day. "I am truly amazed at how my mom does this over and over and over again because she thinks of every single person," says Michael.

  2. They wouldn't wear face masks during Covid but they will go to great lengths to dress up in costumes with uncomfortable bonnets and pantaloons.

    1. Their behavior during Covid irked me to no end! They acted the opposite of how good Christians and citizens are supposed to act.

    2. Good Christians and citizens live a godly life and obey God's laws as well as man's law. There were no LAWS requiring masks, it was a choice. I'm sure they were considerate of others while in public and followed local mandates for public places. What they do in their own homes is no one's business.

  3. As I recall, all the Bates girls wore Prairie dresses when they were younger (before they were in a tv show). This probably brings back many fond memories for them.

  4. I suspect they take advantage of Michael. I really feel badly for her.

  5. I hope Michaela Kellen can get pregnant again after her miscarriage last year. She and Brandon would be good parents. I pray for them.

    1. I agree. Life is never fair, but I think she has gotten an especially bad deal as this family is so obsessed with having babies and her parents preach that God is in control of the womb, etc. If God is in "control" why do the ones with the clotting issue get to take medicine to sustain their pregnancies? Seems very inconsistent to me.

    2. Michael and Brandon could be parents if they chose to be. Surrogacy and adoption build many families. If they are hung up on biology that’s on them.

  6. They were beautifully done! What a talented seamstress she is. Her and her Mom created a wonderful celebration together that they will remember for many years to come. 🙂

  7. That's a lot of sewing and the dresses are lovely. I love sewing dresses but I need lessons in setting sleeves and invisible zippers!

    1. Sleeve setting is nothing, it's just a matter of adjusting gathers or easing in to fit. Invisible zippers are basically an upside-down zipper (teeth inside). Most good modern machines have the invisible zipper foot that makes the job simple.

    2. Regina, I don't care for setting sleeves, and I just learned how to do an invisible zipper the last time I made a dress. I had to get help and watch a youtube video a few times to get it right. I understand what you are saying.

  9. I would like to ask Michaela just how does Kelly think of every single person with I Love You Day? It seems to me that it is Michaela who does all of the sewing and prep work for this event and most of the other parents' events too.
