'Erin's Surprise Takes the Cake' Recap

Bringing Up Bates "Erin's Surprise Takes the Cake"
  • Erin finds out she’s pregnant and is thrilled but very surprised. That evening, while company is over, one of the guests presents Chad with a cake that has the message written on it. He is shocked.
  • Later, Addallee, Ellie, and Callie come over to Erin’s to help bake a cake. “When we go to Erin’s house and we make something to eat, she literally lets all of us kids do it all,” says Addallee.
  • While Erin and the girls are decorating the cake with strawberries, Erin breaks the news, and the girls are thrilled, especially because they are the first Bates family members, aside from Kelly, who had accompanied Erin to a doctor’s appointment, to hear the big news.
  • Erin allows the girls to call the rest of the family and share the announcement. Kelly says she knows Erin is excited to be a mom again but certainly not looking forward to the intense morning sickness or the health complications.
  • “I really always envisioned myself with at least three kids because I know me and my siblings had so much fun together, and I love the fact that we were close in age because we did everything together,” says Erin.
  • Whitney has officially joined the Bailey and Co. Real Estate team as a REALTOR®! She has taken the three-week class, passed the licensing exam, and is ready to get to work. She brings Bradley and Kaci Lynn over to the family's house so she can go into the office, where she meets with her boss, Justin, to receive pointers for kicking off her real estate career.
  • “I worked my way through college, and I was just kind of praying, ‘Should I go back to work? What options are there out there?’ Because I want to be with my babies, but I still would like to do something that helps people and gets out in the community. Real estate was brought up, and the Lord just kind of worked out every little detail.”
  • Whitney’s schedule is very flexible, and she is able to do the bulk of her work from home or at the office on the days Zach is off. If she happens to have a meeting while Zach is working, both sets of parents live ten minutes away and love to babysit.
  • “It’s like a daycare play care center,” says Zach of his parents' house. “You’ve got five little boys Bradley’s age and two or three little girls…all throwing toys and fighting and having fun. I am so excited for Whitney and so proud of Whitney for all the work that she’s put into this real estate license.”
  • Trace is trying out for the Crown College basketball team, and a couple of his friends are over at the house teaching him basic drills. “Most of the kids have been doing it for ten, fifteen years…and Trace is walking in kind of cold turkey,” says Gil.
  • One of the guys tells Trace that Trace's biggest obstacle is his negative mental attitude. He makes Trace do ten pushups for every negative remark, and before long, Trace's mental attitude has improved.

  1. On my 6th pregnancy I found "pink stork solution" morning sickness help. That was my first pregnancy that I felt good. Someone should tell Erin.

  2. Just wondering how was ‘the message’ written up on the cake? It doesn’t say what it actually said.
And also on the blog earlier in the day you posted that Whitney walked out of her bosses office with a gift that put a smile on her face, but no mention was made of what that gift was on the recap... perhaps the sign with her name on it?

    1. Anonymous 10:31 I got the impression the gift was the sign her boss gave her as she was leaving. I thought Whitney looked very professional.

  3. I'm glad they addressed Whitney's job in such a positive light. I noticed Kelly and Gil didn't speak about it and wonder if they disapprove. However, having Zack's support is most important and Whitney certainly seems to have that.

Regarding Erin's pregnancy, I thought the cake she baked with the younger sibs was going to be the one she used to tell Chad. However, it looks like she shared a small cake with him and simply had the girls over to bake a cake and give them the word so they could tell the others. It was nice for Erin to include them.

    2. I get the impression that Gil and Kelly encourage young women to pursue an education and have some job skills. Both of them went to college. (I don't know if they'd want their kids to go to a secular college. They all seem to attend Crown.)

    3. I'm glad to know that. Good for them.

    4. I thought they went to Crown because it was close by the house.

  5. What's the brand of the white floral dress Erin wears in this episode? Carlin wears a similar maroon dress on during the couch interview.

  6. Whitney mentioned how grateful she is to have her parents and Zach's parents & Zach to help the children when she has meetings. Babies/children grow so quickly, I hope she gets as much time with them as possible - I wish her much success.

  7. Did anyone notice that Addallee has a speech issue? She sounds like she has a hearing issue. Not trying to sound mean, just curious. My nephew (who is deaf) sounds the same.

    3. Here’s an explanation.

All 18 births have gone smoothly without complications, except for one: Addallee, baby number 15.

"Addalee is our special little baby because she almost didn't make it," Kelly said. "Addallee stopped breathing and her heart stopped."

Little Addallee was rushed to the hospital after she was born prematurely and spent 17 days there -- a very expensive hospital stay.

"We didn't have insurance," Gil said. "We negotiated with the insurance, with the hospitals, and I said, 'I know insurance companies don't pay full price, could we set up a payment plan based on what you would feel is a justified -- a fair price.' They graciously worked with us."

Today, Addallee, whom everyone calls "Addee" has slight hearing problems but is otherwise healthy and the Bates continue on without any

  8. I thought it was reported that she has a hearing loss. If so, she should be evaluated to determine if she would benefit from hearing aids. She should also be receiving speech therapy. I taught deaf children for 35 years. I hope Kelly is taking the appropriate steps to help her daughter.
