Driving Lessons? Not in My Car...

"I look around, and I'm like, 'Well I can't take my car because obviously you've never driven before. There's Lawson's car! Jackson, Let's go driving.'"
-Zach Bates

While Carlin and Katie Bates visit Carlin's boyfriend in Nashville, Zach and Whitney Bates take Jackson Bates driving for the first time. Needless to say, Lawson Bates isn't too thrilled when his oldest brother chooses his car as the test vehicle. An all-new episode of Bringing Up Bates airs tomorrow on UP. Check out the promo video below.

  2. In the US random people are allowed to teach you how to drive?

    1. I think as long as they are over 21 and have a license and have been driving for a year :-)

    2. Most kids in the U.S. take Drive's Ed. in high school. In Illinois, they have to take the class, plus document a specific number of hours behind the wheel experience. Since the Bate kids are homeschooled, I imagine they independently study the rules of the road and a licensed driver takes them on the road for their practical experience. I agree with Anon12:48 re: too many people in the car. Learning do drive needs concentration and no distractions.

    3. The laws and restrictions vary some by state. In general, you can obtain a learner's permit at 14 or 15 years old. Licensed drivers over the age of 21 are more or less permitted to teach those who have received their learner's permit. There are professionals who are licensed to teach people to drive and many do teach in the public schools but largely, the majority of the licensed drivers in the US first practiced under the supervision of family members and friends until they passed their written and physical driving exams.

    4. Adults 18 or older who have a driver's license can teach someone to drive. In this case, yes, an older brother can teach a younger brother how to drive.

    5. Only if they have a valid drivers license.

    6. Yeah...as long as you're old enough.

    7. No, not really. It must be a person who live in your state, who is over the age of 21. Who has a Drivers License.

    8. Haha yep! In my state (PA) the only requirement is that the person teaching has to be a licensed adult who's at least 21 years old.

  3. I think it would have been far easier on Jackson to have Just only his oldest brother in the vehicle with him,as he requested and not a packed car load. That isn't easy for a learning drivers nerves. Plus Zach seems so mellow and calming and would be the best teacher.

  4. Most states require teens to complete a certain number of classroom and behind the wheel training with a certified instructor. Tennessee is one of just a handful of states that has no such requirement. In any event, beginning drivers need experience, so it is up to families to help supervise.
If you have only a learner's permit, you must have a licensed driver with you when driving.

  5. He did a great job for being a beginner.

  6. Jackson should have his Mom or Dad teach him instead of a brother. I in Illinois you can only have 1 person in the car with you and it has be be your Mother or Father.

  7. Lawson, use the shoulder strap on the seatbelt 100% of the time. It's there for a reason...to keep you safe!

  8. Where I live a learner can only have the person teaching them to drive, no other passengers. Less distraction I would presume.

  9. Can anyone tell me why UP TV keeps chopping up prior episodes and putting them together then calling them NEW? This is borderline fraudulent!! I record all NEW shows, but as soon as I see that I've seen them before I delete them. Last Thursday had three "NEW" shows but two were just new arrangements. I love the Bates but hate how UP TV is doing this.
    Thanks!
