Bates Around the World

With only one week to go until the Bringing Up Bates season six premiere (woohoo!) UP has launched a new video series called Bates Around the World. In this clip, the four oldest Bates sons (Zach Bates, Lawson Bates, Nathan Bates, and Trace Bates) try four uniquely flavored candies from four different countries. What do you think of their reactions? Have you ever tried any of these candies?

  4. I'm from Finland and I love salted liqourice. But I do know that people from other countries rarely like it. I think it's a so called aquired taste.

    1. Im from the UK and tried salted liquorice once, I'm really sorry but it was horrible! I took it into work for my colleagues to try not one liked it, it is very much an aquired taste, not at all what we are used to

    1. They must be really mild, that kinda transparent brown thing doesn't even look like liquorice.
American people (and pretty much the rest of the world) just don't have the acquired taste for salty liquorice, unlike Scandinavian and Dutch people.

    2. I think they are eating "turkish peppers", hard candy with kind of salted liquorice powder in them. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyrkisk_peber

  8. I'm Canadian, and we used to have Thrills gum. It looked like Chicklets gum, but it was purple and tasted like rosewater. I never thought it tasted like soap...and it wasn't made with soap, but some people thought it did taste like soap. I loved it. It's hard to find now because it is now made in Spain, and imported... Only specialty old-fashioned candy stores sell it.

  9. One of my all time favorites is "Sing of Mary, Pure and Lowly". I hesitate to even say this as there is so much Catholic hatred and misconceptions among so many on these ( and Duggar) blogs. But if this does get posted I challenge those who don't know this beautiful hymn to look up the lyrics, or better yet find the song ( YouTube maybe?) and listen to the gentle love poured out. Anyway every time we sing this at Mass I tear up with such emotion. Such love of our Saviour, our Heavenly Father, and a humble handmaiden who answered the call of God to become the Mother of God.

    1. Think you meant to post this on "favorite hymn" blog. But, yes, a lovely hymn none the less.

    3. I'm sorry to hear that. I'm not Catholic, but will look up that song. There's a beautiful song sung at Catholic funeral masses that always makes me tear up -- On Eagle's Wings. I encourage people to listen to it on YouTube. Absolutely beautiful.

  10. I know this is supposed to be funny. However, their immaturity as grown men spitting out candy from various cultures around the world is appalling. I have had the privilege of travel, and I would never insult another's culture in this manner. I also taught my children...young children...the same respect. This shows how uncouth this family truly is. No wonder they hated NYC---just to much diversity for their small world views. Perhaps some of these episodes should be private among family members only.

    1. Agreed. Some things are definitely only funny to your family---and should be kept that way.

    2. This is funny plain and simple LOL. If you can't see the humor in it then that is ok too but this family is still mature, and graceful and respectful by all means. Life is short, learn to laugh at things and lighten up! Watch it again and look at how hard Trace is laughing, bet you anything you will at least crack a smile! LOL

  12. Another Finn here and salty-peppery-candy-lover, too. As soon as I saw the title of this video I knew they would try salted liquorice. Gotta admit that I have made my foreign friends to try all kinds of salmiakki and liquorice and oh boy is it fun to see their faces:D and when I go abroad I can't find a candy that I like, everything's too sweet and mild... :))
ps. Nice to know I'm not the only Finn reading this blog.

    1. She already explained it a couple of times. It's for the search engine. For readers who want to look up a specific person, it's easier this way to find all the posts they are in.
Now you can sleep in peace :)
