Josie Bates' Career Plans

Seventeen-year-old Josie Bates is in cosmetology school and plans to work in a salon after she graduates and earns her license. Although some of her sisters were hesitant to let her touch their hair at first, it didn't take long before she earned their trust.

In this sneak peak of Thursday's new episode, Tori and Josie play a little joke on Carlin.

  1. Oh that's a funny joke to play on Carlin๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
I'm sure Josie will do well in cosmetology school.

  3. Good to see these young women pursuing independent endeavors and planning ahead for earning a living. Even if they choose to spend time at home raising a family, it's good to know there's a career to can fall back on if the need arises.

    1. Love that she sees this as a opportunity for ministering to others. She can use her craft to be a great emotional blessing to cancer patients and seniors, and help women who need to get a more professional appearance to land an office job, etc.

    2. 7:28 The term 'ministering' can have more than one meaning and when it's used in place of the verbs 'help' or 'assist' it can sometimes confuse the listener, in that they may envision ministering religious beliefs. Service jobs innately provide an opportunity for helping others, whether it be a hair stylist, doctor, nurse, firefighter, police officer, teacher, etc. I would be offended if anyone in a service industry took it upon themselves to share the Scriptures with me or pass out tracts on the job, especially without permission or an invitation to do so.

  6. That's why I love Bates family!!! They're allowed to do whatever they want to. I feel so bad for Duggars family because the parents are way too strict and don't allow their kids to explore with their careers by going to college. :/

    1. Joe Duggar has gone to college in Tennessee. Why do you claim they 'don't allow' them to go to college.

  7. Could someone please ask the Bates parents this question: Are their daughters allowed to cut their hair short? Must they wear long hair for their beliefs? This is an unanswered and addressed thing. I'd sure like to know if it's a requirement for the women to have long hair, because they all seem to have it, Kelly included.

    1. I have heard that they are not allowed to have short hair. I am kinda glad they don't. They are so beautiful and their hair is amazing. The only thing I wish was that they didn't have to wear those ugly skirts all the time. I understand they have to be modest but at least decent looking skirts might not be so bad. Also the swimming in skirts while the boys wear bathing suits seems a bit unfair. I love this family and only have a very few issues with them.

    2. Personally I love their skirts though for me I only wear dresses.
I don't know about swimming in their skirts though. I would look for some modest swimsuits similar to what the Duggars wear.

    3. I have read that they are encouraged to have long wavy hair by their
      denomination.

    4. Long hair is also a very popular style with teenagers and young women right now. And they don't all wear skirts only. Alyssa and Whitney wear pants. I doubt they will be the only two.

  8. That is one of the most toxic careers a person can have. I hope she thinks about her health and the health of her future children.

  9. Oddly enough, I actually think Tori looks more like Micheal with the darker hair. I know Michael's hair is not dark but for some reason that's what I see :0)

  12. Enjoy the clips so much as I can't get Bringing up Bates in Canada and it's one of my favourites. Glad the girls got through the wisdom teeth procedure fine. Carlin was funny and I don't mean that in an unkind way. As Josie mentioned, I've noticed from a Christian friend, you can really minister to your clients, as many people share things with their cosmetologist and/or hairdresser, even challenges they are going through in life that they may not share with just anyone. Blessings to all the family!

  15. How is hair styling a ministry? Why can't these people just do or say anything that isn't part of "ministry'? I don't understand. Will she be allowed to work in a shop that plays popular music overhead? Most do. What will they do then? Is it against her beliefs to give a strange man a haircut and touch his head? Is it against their beliefs for her to give someone a short hair do? I'm not being sarcastic, I'm really asking here. If anyone knows, please respond and clear this up for me as I'm confused as to what their real beliefs entail.

    1. She said that she would work in a salon. I'm sure she'd look for one with a healthy environment. The part of her wanting to do it for ministry. Means that, whatever she does with her life, she would like to use it serve the Lord in some way. So in this case, she might help out with hair for weddings or something like that. The desire of a Christian is to do everything for the Lord. I'm sure they would allow her to cut men's hair. As far as long hair or short, I think they have personal preferences not beliefs. At least, that's how I look at it. Their beliefs are Bible based, so if you would like to know more, I suggest you read the Bible, it will tell you everything that the Bates believe. ;)

    2. Touching someone's hair or head is not against their beliefs especially with the intent to cut their hair. The salon for the college is open, so they have to cut both men's hair and women's hair. If she is going to use hair styling as a ministry, then she probably plans to donate some of her time to cut hair for missionaries or the poor or some ministry. Anything can be ministry related when you donate your time and resources to be of help to other people. There are hundreds of salons, so I am sure if she chooses to work in one, she will check their music first. She could also open her own shop. Then she can pick the music that is played.

It isn't against their beliefs to give someone a short hair cut. The Bates don't try to force their beliefs on other people. Christians don't think it is wrong for women to have short hair but many prefer long hair. The Bible calls our hair a covering. Obviously longer hair covers more, but it isn't a sin to have short hair.

    3. @ 7:45 You have asked a sincere question. I'll try to answer it. Many of us Christians believe in doing things as unto the Lord. Many of the things we do for others whether it's styling hair, babysitting, or whatever is considered a ministry. I would guess that's how it is with the Bates. I'm sure Josie has explored and researched the whole beauty school thing and is aware of the variety of customers she will have.
I probably didn't answer your questions very well.

    4. Can't speak to the Bates's beliefs, but my grandmother's nursing home has hairdressers who volunteer their time to cut and style hair. They also have people who do nails. Going to the salon is something my grandmother really misses now that she's in assisted living, and these stylists really do a nice job and make her feel good about herself. So if Josie wanted to do volunteer work like that, I guess that could be a ministry.

I think families as religious as the Bateses often have large networks. It's possible that she could freelance out of her home and only serve customers with similar religious beliefs, but that's speculation.

    5. 3:24- What anyone, including the Bates, believe is in the Bible is based on a particular translation or interpretation- all courtesy of human beings. Telling someone just to read the Bible to figure out what someone else believes to be true is fruitless. People will all have their own take on it and there will be someone willing to tell them what to think. There's quite a bit of violence and downright weird stuff in the Scriptures. I doubt the Bates follow those parts.

  17. I she going to preach to them while she's cutting someone's hair? Most won't appreciate it and I'm sure her boss won't allow her to do that while she's working, unless she's going to work for a Christian like-minded friend who just does friends hair.
