New Blog Header

What do you think of the new header? We are grateful to a loyal reader from Norway for taking the time to design it for us.

Less than six weeks to go until the season three premiere of Bringing Up Bates! Did you know that season one is available on iTunes and Amazon Instant video? Check out Sunday's blog post for details.

*We apologize for the typo in Gil's name and have asked the designer to correct it.

  5. Beautiful! Why does Allie's include her middle name, though? Seems odd to include it, especially on just one.

    1. It's the southern thing, like Kelly Jo. Southern people sometimes call someone by two names, sometimes even if the second name isn't their name. In the north, people want short names. In the south, people seem to want long names, at least some of them do. It depends on the personality of the people. With Allie Jane, that must be what they call her.

    2. I didn't grow up in the south, but I moved to the south. It was puzzling to me too, but I learned to just watch and be amused at the southern way. The Duggars have jim-bob, john-David, joy-Anna, and Jordyn-grace. Billy-bob is also common. Norma grace. Sometimes people run them together in the first name, like Addallee. Or Rosalee. Sometimes their name sounds like a law firm, Bishop Marcus Smith. Janie May is common. We've all heard of Ellie Mae. I know a lady named Annie Pearl. Whenever someone talks to these people, they don't say, "hey Ellie..." No, they say, "hey Ellie Mae..." Sometimes the double name isn't flowing, it's more like a tongue twister, but that doesn't stop them from using the double name every time they talk to them. And the person whose name it is doesn't even consider insisting on just the first name. It's part of the culture, and what southern belle wouldn't want to be a southern belle? She's usually quite proud to be "Annie Pearl..." I think it's part of the southern way of speaking, where people draw out what they say. I know several old southern women who pour on the honey when they talk to you. "Oh, ho--n--n--ey, ssss-weet--heart, dar--lin... I just love ya, Annie Pearl..." It's the southern way. I hadn't mastered it. Yankees think that southern women are so polite, when they say things like, "bless his heart..." But they have no idea what that means. Hint: it's not complementary.

  6. Thanks for the new blog header. It resembles the Duggars. I liked the family feel with the group and country setting of the old header:) It gave me a more "warm and homey" feeling. I enjoy anything with the Bates family so if change is where this is headed, I'm there.

  8. It looks good except that Allie's photo needs to be a softer color. It is too bight pink and doesn't match the others.

  11. Thanks for making a new Bates blog header with photos and names. It looks good. When it is up-dated (as people grow, have kids, etc) it would be good to have the same colors. Allie-Jane's picture jumps out because it is bright pink. And to answer another posters question In the south sometimes people go by two names. So if you call out only Allie she won't turn around; she is Allie-Jane.

  23. Proud to be from California, where when we say "Bless his heart," we mean it as a prayer that God will bless that person.

  24. I love it, but I would recommend changing the picture of Allie Jane, it is a really bright picture and it distracts from the rest of the family.
